For decades, the narrative around obesity has been painfully narrow: eat less, move more, willpower is the key.

This finger-wagging approach has pinned the blame on individuals, ignoring the sprawling, interconnected systems that shape our lives. It’s time to flip the script. The obesity crisis isn’t just a personal failing—it’s a symptom of broken systems that demand a radical overhaul

Consider the food systems pumping out ultra-processed, calorie-dense, nutrient-poor products, marketed aggressively to vulnerable populations.

Think about health systems that often treat obesity as a cosmetic issue rather than a chronic disease, leaving patients without adequate or resources.

Reflect on government systems that subsidize junk food production while failing to regulate advertising or ensure access to affordable, healthy options.

Ponder the media, perpetuating stigma and oversimplified solutions, and the environments we inhabit—urban sprawls with few safe spaces to exercise, workplaces that prioritize sedentary lifestyles, and communities where fresh produce is a luxury.

These systems aren’t just failing us—they’re actively fueling the crisis. And the consequences extend far beyond waistlines. Obesity is a complex, chronic disease that acts as a gateway to other killers: diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and more. Tackling obesity isn’t just about weight—it’s about slashing the global burden of these interconnected conditions.

Obesity is largely personal responsibilities.Individuals must make better choices to better their health. We spend much on our phones than we do outdoor or in a gym exercising.lt our choices to walk, jog, run for our health or take bikes or cars when it's not needed.

Exercise is good but not the major cause of obesity. Hit the, streets of lagos and you'd hardly see obese people throughout your day's search. The junks people eat is the main cause. Each time I'm abroad, I must locate an african restaurant or at worst, a Chinese restaurant around me. I can't eat burger king,.KFC or McDonald's chicken. Even the orisirisi that would go with it is disgusting. Give it to an American and see how they'd devour it in a matter of minutes. All we need in Nigeria is supplement and we'd be good. Obesity campaign should be taken to America and south africa who have same food composition as them

It's a 2 way thing. When your environment doesn't favour you it's becomes more difficult.

Exactly.

However, our focus here is Nigeria not the west. Let them handle their problems.

Nigeria has double disease burden. We have high incidence of communicable and non communicable disease.

I don’t think we may have up to 1,000 obese people in Nigeria. If the world is celebrating extremely lean and bony people, Nigeria will be number one place. Hunger Dey ground!

Your estimate is very wrong. You seem not to be aware of what is going on.

Same thing I made in the post. People keep thinking it's this simple. It's not just personal issue it's also a societal issue.

Obesity this and that sad

In the olden days, healthy men and women were measured by their bulky size (big stomachs included) until the west thought us that 'lepa" is now the measurement for good health.

We used to make jest of lepa people while growing up as people who don't eat well or people who weren't well fed.

You seem not to even understand the health risk. You have Google, read to understand why this matters.

Whether you are obese or otherwise, if God says you will clock 80 or 90 years before HE calls you home, no Obesity or Kwashiorkor can take you!

Late Emmanuel Iwuanyanwun was an obese man and he died at 80+

Billionaire, Mike Adenuga, is an obese man and he's currently 71 years old.

What matters is God's mercy upon your life! HE gives life and HE takes as HE wills.

It's not about Lifespan but about health span. Do you think living 80 years with chronic heart problems is a good thing?

Some of this people are too sick and died terribly, there is nothing good about that.

Trash.

Arrant nonsensical trash!

Only a d1mwitt3d Buff0n would say lifestyles don't matter on how long and healthy you can live.

The Japanese have the oldest population in the world and obesity is a crime there..

You still think it's a mere coincidence that you have such a poor life expectancy in your sh.it hole of a country?

Where exactly in Nigeria do you see the obese people, compared to the US? You may be living in a utopian world to be saying this

If you have Obese tendencies, please watch what you consume and try, just try to inculcate some exercise routines into your daily paroles rather than shouting "I'm a foodie" upandan!

Some have food but cannot eat
Some can eat but have no food
We have food and we can eat
Glory be to Jesus Christ

World where there are innocent children who didn't ask to be born going to bed and about their day without assurance of food, is the same world people have enough to eat and be obese

I'm telling you, when you go to gym and see people complain they are fat, tell them that the first thing they should do is or set up a food back and give to the hungry...
... then come back to the gym and tone your abs and improve your cardio
