Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, a former Governor of Abia State, former Chief Whip of the Nigerian Senate, and current Chairman of the Senate Committee on the South-East Development Commission (SEDC), has firmly rejected claims that the Nigerian Senate operates as a rubber stamp for the executive arm of government.

Speaking during a televised interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, Senator Kalu responded to public criticism suggesting that the National Assembly lacks independence and fails to effectively scrutinize executive proposals.

“Do you work in the National Assembly? Do you know what it takes to make laws?” Kalu challenged the host, Seun Okinbaloye, emphasizing that every bill ed by the National Assembly undergoes due legislative process.

“There is no law that is ed at the National Assembly that did not take its course.”

The former Senate Chief Whip was particularly emphatic about the Tax Reform Bill, a key fiscal policy initiative of the Tinubu istration.

He cited the rigorous and prolonged legislative engagement that preceded its age by the Senate as evidence of the Senate’s autonomy.

“How can you say we are rubber stamps, when you saw how the Tax Bill was ed? Actually, the day we ed the bill, I went to Senator Akpabio’s house to congratulate him because it was a thorough job well done. Many people thought it would be ed immediately, but you saw how many months we took.”

The Tax Reform Bill, part of President Bola Tinubu's broader Renewed Hope Agenda, drew significant public attention and criticism when first introduced. Senator Kalu noted that despite initial tension, the Senate remained measured and thorough in its approach.

“When President Tinubu brought this Bill, it seemed like the heavens would fall. But as a legislature, we calmed everyone down and went to work.

"We scrutinised the bill clause by clause,” he said. “I never even thought it would be ed, but it was.

Addressing the broader perception that the legislature is complacent, Kalu stressed that behind the scenes, lawmakers are doing the hard work of oversight and policy scrutiny.

“What you people want to see is us fighting with the executive, but we are mature adults. For the interest of Nigeria, we have mechanisms to prevent fights. There are a lot of executive bills we rejected and sent back. We cannot start telling you everything we are matured.”

When asked whether he was concerned about the Senate's negative public image, the seasoned lawmaker responded unequivocally:

“I am reporting to you that we are not rubber stamps. People might think what they want to think. But as for me, I’m not looking for money or anything and I am not a rubber stamp. Most of the Senators are not.”

On the economic challenges facing the nation, including mounting national debt and inflation, Senator Kalu urged patience, citing past periods of austerity and economic restructuring.

“There is always pain whenever you want to change from the old ways of doing things,” he said, adding that even he has had to scale back personally.

“I now fly commercial planes to empathise with my workers. My private jets are there. I can't run them as usual because business is no longer as usual.”

Senator Kalu concluded by reaffirming his belief in President Tinubu’s reform agenda but noted that Nigeria’s recovery requires a collective effort.

“We are working even though the governors are working to reclaim our country. Nigerians are in pain, yes, but things will get better.”

As Chairman of the Senate Committee on the South-East Development Commission (SEDC), Kalu remains a key player in bridging federal legislative efforts with the specific developmental needs of the South-East region.

Arochukwu/Ohafia 2027: APC Group Backs Ifeanyi Ogbonna, demands Automatic ticket

...Says His Emergence Will Reset Years of Neglect, Describes Him as a "Political Masterstroke"

The League of Abia Progressive Assembly (LAPA), a leading political group within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State, has officially endorsed Hon. Ifeanyi Elvis Ogbonna as its preferred candidate for the Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency seat in the 2027 general elections.

In a powerful statement released on Tuesday, LAPA called on the APC leadership at all levels to grant Ogbonna an automatic ticket, describing his candidacy as not only viable but “a political masterstroke.”

The group’s public declaration marks a significant moment in the build-up to 2027, setting the tone for what could become a defining battle to reclaim the constituency for the APC after years of opposition dominance.

According to LAPA, Ogbonna popularly known as “Ignes” is not just another aspirant but a transformational figure with the capacity to alter the political and developmental trajectory of the Arochukwu/Ohafia axis.

The statement, tly signed by Engr. Christopher Okpara, the State Publicity Secretary, and Comrade Ajani Awa Ukpai, the State Chairman, cited Ogbonna’s “exceptional qualifications, political pedigree, business acumen, and sound educational background” as key reasons for the endorsement.

“His track record of service and unwavering commitment to grassroots development stand as a testament to his capacity to deliver purposeful representation to our people,” the statement read.

LAPA urged the APC to avoid the distractions of internal competition and instead rally around Hon. Ogbonna as a consensus candidate, arguing that doing so would send a clear message of unity, strategy, and readiness to win.

“We therefore call on the leadership of the APC at all levels to adopt him as the party’s sole candidate for the Arochukwu/Ohafia House of Representatives seat. His candidacy is not just viable, it is a political masterstroke,” the group asserted.

The group also praised the leadership of the Abia APC under Dr. Kingsley Ononogbu for steering the party with vision and clarity, expressing full faith in the party’s direction and ability to deliver victory if it makes strategic choices like Ogbonna’s automatic endorsement.

LAPA took a swipe at previous representatives of the constituency from other parties, claiming that Arochukwu/Ohafia has suffered neglect under both the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party.

They referenced the tenures of Hon. Uko Nkole and current Labour Party representative Hon. Ibe Okwara Osonwa as evidence of missed opportunities and underwhelming performance.

“It is regrettable that our federal constituency has never had the privilege of APC leadership at the national legislative level. From the years of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) under Hon. Uko Nkole to the current tenure of the Labour Party's Hon. Ibe Okwara Osonwa, our people have been denied the dividends of democracy and true development. The status quo must change.”

LAPA emphasized that with Ogbonna, the constituency would finally enjoy meaningful legislative representation, infrastructural attention, and alignment with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reform agenda.

Backed by Senator Orji Uzor Kalu and Grassroots Forces

The group revealed that Hon. Ogbonna enjoys the “overwhelming ” of party stakeholders in the state, including the highly influential Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, who represents Abia North Senatorial District.

“Hon. Ogbonna, fondly known as Ignes, is a tireless grassroots mobilizer and enjoys the overwhelming of party stakeholders, including our leader and the distinguished Senator representing Abia North, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu,” LAPA declared.

In closing, the League pledged to deploy its full mobilization structure in of Ogbonna’s candidacy, promising to deliver the constituency to the APC in 2027.

“We are confident that with Ogbonna flying the APC flag, victory is not just possible, it is assured.”

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has defended his recent appearance in the Nigerian Senate wearing a dress branded with “Tinubu 2027,” describing it as a fashionable garment made in Aba, and dismissing criticisms that the attire amounted to political sycophancy.

The former Governor of Abia State and Chief Whip of the 9th Senate made the comments during a live interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday evening.

Reacting to public uproar and media reactions following his choice of clothing during plenary, Kalu said:

“It is a very beautiful dress. I forgot to wear it for this interview. I would have worn it. I have thousands. Most people like it.

Who else would have made that dress other than Aba tailors? It was made in Aba, dyed in Aba, and delivered in Aba. It is only Aba people who are hardworking that can do it.”

When asked whether he would wear the same attire again despite public backlash, he replied confidently:

“It’s very fashionable and I will wear it again. I have it in different colours.”

The interviewer pressed further, pointing to critics who have accused him of sycophancy and premature campaigning. Kalu waved off the suggestion, stating:

“Can a man like me be sycophantic? I am not running for anything other than to return to the Senate. It’s not political sycophancy. I am a man that can’t be sycophantic. I wore it because it’s a uniform for 2027.”

On whether his action was an endorsement of President Bola Tinubu for a second term, the senator didn’t hesitate;

“What is wrong with that? I would be very happy to accept being an unofficial campaign manager for President Tinubu and do the job for him. I have nothing to regret in doing that job.”

He added that there was no law preventing him from wearing the dress and that he was exercising his rights:

“We are a political party and there must be activities of a political party. We had a mid-term assessment of our party where all the stakeholders gathered.

It’s my dress and I have the right to wear anything I like. There is freedom of association and freedom of speech.”

Asked if his action could be seen as inappropriate given the challenges Nigerians are currently facing, Kalu responded:

“It’s you who press people that see something wrong. I don’t see anything wrong with wearing it.”

The senator insisted that even if his choice of clothing sparked debate, he was not concerned:

“INEC has not lifted the ban on campaign preparations but we are preparing.”

The senator’s remarks are likely to intensify political discourse within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), as conversations around the 2027 elections begin to surface.

His unapologetic stance signals early alignment and mobilisation around a potential second-term bid for President Tinubu.

Senator Kalu, who represents Abia North Senatorial District, remains a prominent voice within the party and has continued to publicly affirm his for Tinubu’s leadership, both in words and now in attire.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra State held a high-level stakeholders meeting over the weekend at its state secretariat in Awka, reaffirming its commitment to securing victory in the November 8, 2025 governorship election.

The meeting, which brought together top party leaders and grassroots mobilizers, featured a strategic address by the APC governorship candidate, Prince Dr. Nicholas Ukachukwu (popularly known as Ikukuoma), and the formal introduction of his running mate, Senator Dr. Uche Ekwunife (Iyom), to the party faithful.

Dr. Ukachukwu delivered a stirring call to action, urging party stakeholders to take President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s mandate “Go and get me Anambra” as a solemn charge.

“This is our moment to reclaim Anambra for progressive governance. President Tinubu has given us a clear directive, and we must ensure that his message sinks deep into every ward, every polling unit, every community.

"APC must become the face of hope, development, and ability in Anambra,” Ukachukwu declared.

He outlined the APC’s core agenda for Anambra, anchored on three pillars: security, industrialization, and an agricultural revolution designed to stimulate economic growth, create jobs, and restore investor confidence.

“We will bring a new dawn of safety, industry, and food security. These are not campaign slogans, they are our solemn pledges to Ndi Anambra,” he added.

Addressing the enthusiastic crowd, Ukachukwu officially presented Senator Ekwunife as his running mate, describing her as a “tested and trusted partner with unmatched grassroots appeal.”

“Iyom is not just a politician; she’s a force of nature. Her record speaks volumes. Together, we are building a movement that will take power back to the people,” Ukachukwu said.

In her remarks, Senator Ekwunife expressed profound gratitude to Ukachukwu and the APC leadership for their confidence in her candidacy. She vowed to bring her experience and energy to bear in delivering victory for the party.

“I am honoured by this call to serve. Prince Ukachukwu and I are fully aligned in our vision for a new Anambra rooted in security, driven by industrial growth, and sustained through agricultural innovation,”

“This ticket is not about politics as usual. It’s about resetting the narrative and making government work for the people. We are ready, and we are going all the way,” Ekwunife said.

The stakeholders meeting, attended by influential APC figures across the state, was characterized by a renewed sense of unity and determination.

Speaker after speaker expressed their commitment to the Ikukuoma-Iyom Mandate, pledging to mobilize their constituencies for what they called a “historic rescue mission.”

The event comes on the heels of President Tinubu’s endorsement of the Ukachukwu-Ekwunife ticket, during which he personally handed them the APC flag at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa.

The endorsement has injected fresh momentum into the campaign, as Ukachukwu ramps up consultations with community leaders, business executives, youth organizations, and women’s groups.

Dismissing speculations of any alliance with the incumbent All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) istration, Ukachukwu made the party’s position clear:

“Let there be no confusion—APC is Tinubu, and Tinubu is APC. We are not in any alliance with APGA. Our mission is to clean, win big, and win for the people,” he affirmed.

As the countdown to the election begins, the APC in Anambra is consolidating its structures, unveiling a robust grassroots mobilization plan, and projecting a message of hope and transformation that it believes will resonate strongly with voters across the 21 local government areas.

The party’s leadership expressed confidence that the combination of Ukachukwu’s business acumen and Ekwunife’s political depth will prove decisive in breaking APGA’s grip on the state and ushering in a new era of progressive governance.

As Nigeria s the rest of the world in commemorating Children’s Day 2025, Abia State chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Hon. Ifeanyi Ogbonna, popularly known as ‘Ignes,’ has extended warm felicitations to Nigerian children while commending President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his proactive policies aimed at child welfare.

In a statement released on Tuesday in Abuja to mark the occasion themed “Stand Up, Speak Up: Building a Bullying-Free Generation,” Ogbonna emphasized the critical need to protect the rights of children and create an environment where they can thrive without fear, discrimination, or abuse.

“With heartfelt joy, I congratulate our dear children on today’s Children’s Day, an international holiday that has been officially observed in Nigeria since 1964,” he stated.

Ogbonna stressed that beyond the celebrations, Children’s Day is a “clarion call” to rededicate national efforts toward securing a sustainable future for young Nigerians.

He harped on the necessity of quality education, healthcare, nutrition, and equal rights as foundational elements for child development, in line with the United Nations’ resolution on children’s welfare.

The Abia APC stalwart lauded President Tinubu for directing a comprehensive review of key legislation the Child Rights Act (2003) and the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act (2015) to enhance protections and close implementation gaps.

“I also commend the President’s child feeding initiative through the Nutrition 774 programme and the School Feeding Scheme, which are vital to improving child health and cognitive development,” Ogbonna added.

Speaking in line with this year’s anti-bullying theme, Ogbonna called for a united front against all forms of abuse including bullying, child labour, exploitation, and molestation. “All hands must be on deck to put an end to these threats,” he said.

From his constituency in Arochukwu, Ogbonna pledged to continue contributing to the protection and upliftment of children, acknowledging the socio-economic and security challenges they face.

“There is hope for a just society where every child can feel secure, grow in peace, access quality education and healthcare, and have the enabling environment to pursue their dreams and contribute productively to national development,” he concluded.

According to the recently published legislative scorecard by OrderPaper.ng which revealed the varying performances of Anambra State’s representatives in the 10th National Assembly, Senator Victor Umeh, representing Anambra Central recorded zero bills sponsored since the commencement of the current National Assembly session.

Senate Performance: A Mixed Baggage

Senator Tony Nwoye of Anambra North leads the Senate bench from the state with an impressive total of 10 sponsored bills, reflecting a proactive approach to legislative duties while the late Senator Dr. Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah from Anambra South managed to sponsor 2 bills before his untimely ing.

In stark contrast, Senator Victor Umeh OFR, elected in 2023, the former National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), has yet to introduce any bill in the Senate.

This zero count stands out sharply among his colleagues and raises concerns about his legislative engagement and representation of Anambra Central constituents.

House of Representatives: Varied Levels of Legislative Productivity

The House of Representatives from Anambra State also show a broad spectrum of legislative activity. Leading the pack is Hon. Agbodike Paschal, who has sponsored 23 bills, by far the highest number among the state’s delegation.

Following him is Hon. Uchenna Harris Okonkwo with 9 bills and Hon. Dominic Okafor with 3 bills. Other lawmakers, including Hon. Obiageli Lilian Orogbu, Hon. Emeka Godwin Obiajulu, and Hon. George Ozodinobi, have also contributed with 2 and 1 bills respectively.

However, several House have recorded zero bills sponsored. These include Hon. Chinwe Gwacham, Hon. Peter Aniekwe, Hon. Ifeanyi Peter Uzokwe, Hon. Victor Afam Ogene, and Hon. Nnabuife Chinwe Clara. This group’s lack of legislative output has sparked discussions on the effectiveness and ability of their representation.

What Does Zero Bills Mean?

Sponsoring bills is one of the critical ways legislators demonstrate commitment to lawmaking and advocacy for their constituents. While the number of bills is not the sole indicator of performance committee work, motions, constituency projects, and oversight roles also matter the absence of any sponsored bill is often seen as a sign of low legislative initiative.

For Senator Victor Umeh, his zero-bill record in the 10th Senate raises questions, especially considering his political stature and the expectations of his constituents who look to him for robust representation in Abuja.

Holding Lawmakers able for Anambra’s Progress

This scorecard highlights the need for constituents and civil society to actively monitor their elected officials. Legislators who are more active in sponsoring bills are arguably more engaged in shaping policies that affect their constituents and the country.

Though the content and quality of these bills are yet to be analyzed, the raw numbers provide a snapshot of who is more involved in legislative processes.

Anambra citizens and stakeholders must use this information as a tool for advocacy and electoral decision-making, ensuring that representatives deliver tangible legislative results in addition to other duties.

Conclusion

As the 10th National Assembly progresses, the spotlight remains on lawmakers like Senator Victor Umeh to elevate their legislative involvement. Active lawmaking is a vital measure of political ability, and constituents deserve representatives who champion their interests through meaningful legislative initiatives.

For now, the scorecard serves as a timely reminder that political office comes with responsibilities that must be fulfilled, lest voters seek change as the 2027 elections fast approaches.

Abia-North Lawmaker, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has dismissed speculations that the growing wave of endorsements for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027 is a response to fears about opposition coalitions.

Instead, the former Senate Chief Whip emphasized that the endorsements are driven by President Tinubu’s bold leadership and transformative policies.

Addressing of the Senate Press Corps in Abuja on Tuesday, Senator Kalu who chairs the 10th Senate Committee on South-East Development Commission asserted that the All Progressives Congress (APC) has no fear of any coalition, describing the party as “ionate about Nigeria” and focused on nation-building.

Providing responses questions asked by the Senate Journalists at the National Assembly lobby;

“No, no, no. I don’t think a party like APC has anybody to fear. We are the ruling party. We love Nigeria. That’s why many of us are building industries across the country to create jobs even outside government,” Kalu said.

According to him, criticism from the opposition is expected and even necessary in a democratic setting, but such criticism should not be mistaken for weakness on the part of the ruling party.

“The opposition must fight. That’s their job. But our job is to deliver, and we are doing our job perfectly well. In the coming years, Nigerians will appreciate what Mr. President is doing,” he added.

On the President’s recent visit to the Vatican, which had sparked debates due to his faith, Kalu offered a spirited defense, explaining that Tinubu attended at the personal invitation of Pope Francis whom he described as a personal friend of the President.

“It would have been disrespectful if he ignored the Pope’s invitation. About 1.8 billion Catholics, including myself, appreciate that gesture. In 2027, Catholics will that,” he noted.

When asked about the Southeast Endorsement and zone's Party Loyalty The former Abia Governor further disclosed that the Southeast caucus of the APC had long thrown its behind President Tinubu, even before other endorsements emerged.

He pointed to a prior endorsement led by key Southeast figures, including Governors and federal legislators.

“We endorsed him weeks ago, chaired by Governor Hope Uzodinma and co-chaired by the Governor of Ebonyi and the Deputy Speaker.

We initiated the national endorsement,” he said, proudly displaying his attire which he described as symbolic of his for the President.

Giving his verdict on Tinubu’s Economic Policies,Senator Kalu praised the President for making tough but necessary choices like subsidy removal and exchange rate unification, acknowledging the current hardships but emphasizing that these changes were essential for long-term national stability.

“I'm not a politician. I'm a businessman. And this is the first President who ended the cheap money culture. People made money from nothing before. This President is telling us: make money the right way or don’t make it at all,” he stressed.

He maintained that Tinubu’s policies are already impacting the macroeconomic level, and projected that their benefits would soon reach everyday Nigerians.

“Tinubu is not just a Southern President. He will be re-elected by both North and South because it's in the national interest. We don’t want the country to break, we want it to thrive,” he stated.

On his plans for 2027, Kalu while responding to a question on his own political future and track record, Kalu reaffirmed his commitment to serving his constituents and Nigeria with integrity and ion.

He said that while infrastructure and education have been priorities, his focus will shift to agriculture come 2027.

“You must love people to serve them. That’s why I work hard. I don’t even keep a bank . Everything I have goes into helping people—through roads, schools, agriculture, and my foundation,” he declared.

Senator Kalu also urged all Nigerian leaders regardless of party affiliation to speak the truth and focus on uplifting the people rather than trading blame or harboring bitterness.

Residents and stakeholders in Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State have raised concerns over what they describe as continued neglect and marginalization under the representation of Senator Victor Umeh in the 10th National Assembly.

In a statement issued by a concerned citizen, Oballum George Chuks, popularly known as Igwe Armani, constituents accused Senator Umeh of failing to deliver any meaningful constituency projects or empowerment initiatives in the area since assuming office in 2023.

The statement decried what it termed a “return to the dark days of ineffective representation” in Anambra Central Senatorial District, contrasting the current istration with that of the immediate past senator, Uche Ekwunife, who was praised for initiating impactful projects and empowerment programs during her 2019–2023 tenure.

“Nearly two years into his current term, the only trace of development attributed to Senator Umeh in Awka North remains a single, incomplete project from his time in the 8th Senate,” Chuks stated.

A Major concern was directed at a recent Agricultural empowerment program organized by the senator, which the statement described as “the worst in the history of Senatorial representation.”

According to constituents, promises of financial amounting to N500,000 per beneficiary were not fulfilled. Instead, participants reportedly received only cassava stems and coconut seedlings an outcome many labeled as “an embarrassment.”

Senator Umeh, who returned to the Senate on the platform of the Labour Party in 2023, was said to have benefited from the political momentum generated by Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi.

Critics argue that without the wave of that swept the party into prominence, Umeh’s victory at the polls would have been unlikely.

The statement ended with a call for change, urging Ndi Awka North to remain vigilant and resolute ahead of future elections.

“Our people deserve inclusive and development-driven representation. If this trend continues, history will not be kind to Senator Victor Umeh’s tenure,” it concluded.

As of press time, Senator Umeh has not publicly responded to the allegations.

Kenneth Udeh from Abuja

Tension, Anger and fury is gradually escalating among residents of the Bwari Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) over a persistent power outage that has lasted for almost two weeks, severely affecting social and economic life in the communities.

In response to the blackout, some residents have threatened to embark on mass protests, while others are considering legal action against the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) and the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to seek a resolution.

In their frustration, residents have vowed to take to the streets and shut down the offices of AEDC and TCN, citing substantial losses to their businesses and daily activities.

They argue that the blackout has crippled economic, commercial, and social life, and raised concerns about personal hygiene issues that could lead to health hazards.

Bwari, a vast council area in the FCT, encomes major neighborhoods such as Kubwa, Dutse, Gwarinpa, Sokale, Ushafa, Jiigo, Kuduru, and Usma Dam, among others.

It also hosts several critical federal agencies, including the Nigerian Army Mobile Barracks, the Nigerian Defence Estate, Abuja Water Board, the Headquarters of the t issions and Matriculations Board, JAMB and the Nigerian Law School, the DSS Training School, and the Federal Inland Revenue Service, among others.

Residents have connected the prolonged power outage to the nation's ongoing struggles with its energy sector, with many vowing to take to the streets unless the situation is swiftly addressed.

AEDC and TCN’s Explains

The AEDC issued a statement explaining that the power outage is due to a technical fault on the 33kV Bwari Feeder, which has disrupted electricity supply to the affected areas. The company assured customers that its technical team, in collaboration with TCN, is working diligently to restore power.

"Dear valued customers in Sokale Garden, Dutse Makaranta, Dutse Bokuma, Ushafa, Pegi, Gigo, Defence College Estate, Kogo, Zuma, Veritas University, Jamb Headquarters, Law School, Bwari and all its environs.

We wish to inform you that the ongoing power outage is due to a technical fault on the 33kV Bwari Feeder, which is affecting supply to these areas, the statement read.

Similarly, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) confirmed that the blackout is caused by a malfunctioning 33kV breaker at the Kubwa Transmission Station.

NERC expressed apologies for the inconvenience and assured that efforts are underway to restore the power supply.

TCN assured ; "We are working with TCN to restore supply soon. Apologies for the inconvenience. Thank you for your patience".

However, some residents remain skeptical, with one TCN staff itting that the circuit breaker was indeed the root cause but asserting that TCN was not overwhelmed.

Pleading anonymity a staff of the Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, itted that the circuit breaker was actually the issue.

He also mentioned that funds have been requested from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for the purchase of a replacement circuit breaker.

Despite this explanation, residents remain dissatisfied with the prolonged outage, which has already lasted almost two weeks.

One source, speaking privately, criticized the slow response, pointing out that replacing a circuit breaker should not take more than an hour.

The source also lamented the bureaucratic inefficiencies within the system, arguing that the situation reveals the incompetence of those in charge.

“It’s not even that the transformer is faulty,” the source said. “It’s just the circuit breaker. If this were in a modern system, it should have been fixed within hours".

Growing Frustration Among Residents

Comrade Kenneth Chima, a local resident, expressed his frustration with the continued power outage, highlighting the incompetence of AEDC in addressing technical faults promptly.

He urged the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, to take action immediately, emphasizing that electricity is a basic necessity, not a luxury.

Business owners like Oyelakin Segun have also voiced their dissatisfaction. Segun lamented the enormous losses endured during the blackout, warning that patience is running out. “It’s not funny anymore.

"We’ve lost so much, and it seems like nothing is being done about it,” he said, hinting at the possibility of a mass protest if the issue is not addressed soon.

A statement from the Wheel of Hope Human Rights Foundation, led by Comrade Jide Abdulazeez, echoed these concerns, calling for mass action.

Abdulazeez criticized the lack of transparency and official communication, noting the severe consequences of the blackout on the economic, social, and academic lives of residents.

He demanded that the Minister of Power issue a public apology to the people of Bwari and implement a lasting solution.

The statement read;
“Access to electricity is not a luxury; it is a necessity,” Abdulazeez said. “The residents of Bwari deserve better. It is time for those in charge to act responsibly and restore power without further delay.”

"The lack of electricity has paralyzed businesses, disrupted learning, and diminished the quality of life for thousands of citizens who depend on stable power supply for their daily activities.

"What is even more concerning is the apparent absence of transparency, official apology, or visible efforts to resolve this situation.

"We call on the Minister of Power and the relevant authorities to urgently address this issue and offer a public apology to the people of Bwari.

"More importantly, a lasting and sustainable solution must be implemented immediately to prevent such insensitivity and negligence from recurring.

"The residents of Bwari deserve better. Access to electricity is not a luxury it is a necessity. It is time for those in charge to act responsibly and restore power to our community without further delay.

Ezra Usman, a resident of Dutse Alhaji, also shared his frustration, accusing the government of neglecting the plight of the residents. “We’ve had enough,” Usman said. “Perishables have gone bad under this tough economy. We won’t just sit back and do nothing; we’ll take action soon.”

Hon. Emeka Ohaeri, Chairman of the Pmagbe Landlords Association, confirmed that residents have been relentlessly reaching out to him about the ongoing power crisis.

“I’ve made several efforts to address the issue, but both AEDC and TCN have been less than transparent,”.

“I got information that they are likely to resolve the current situation today or tomorrow. I hope they do so quickly to avert what I perceive as a looming protest.

“Imagine JAMB, Law School, Veritas, DSS training school and other important government agencies being thrown into this kind of blackout. Just imagine what small scale businesses have lost. What about perishables in refrigerators. This must not continue to linger.”, He said.

A Deteriorating Power Sector

The situation underscores a stark reflection of the nation’s deteriorating power sector, which has been plagued by repeated failures despite promises from various istrations to address the crisis.

The power grid continues to collapse across the country, leaving millions in the dark and causing significant losses for businesses and individuals alike.

As residents of Bwari and other affected areas await the restoration of power, it remains to be seen whether the authorities will take swift action or whether the people will be forced to escalate their protests further.

The ongoing crisis underscores the urgent need for comprehensive reform in the nation’s energy sector to ensure a stable and reliable power supply for all citizens.

From Abuja, Kenneth Udeh

Tourism expert and writer Ijeoma Anyanechi is calling for a fresh approach to Enugu State’s tourism development, urging government officials and stakeholders to look beyond the usual attractions like Nike Lake, Ngwo Pine Forest, and masquerade celebrations.

In an interview with Kenneth Udeh, the Enugu-born tech enthusiast and author of "Our Last Game" highlighted the urgent need to diversify and modernize the state’s tourism offerings to fully harness its rich cultural, historical, and natural heritage.

Anyanechi, a Business Education graduate from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), also discussed the importance of reviving the reading culture among Nigerian youth, offered advice to parents, and explored the growing impact of artificial intelligence on literature.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I am Ijeoma Anyanechi born and raised in Enugu State and I graduated from the University of Nigeria, UNN where I studied business Education.

I'm a writer of mostly African Literature and also a Tech enthusiast. I have always had ion for our African History as a people and our culture.

Apart from the fact that I Love Tech, I am also currently into data analysis and crypto currency and I also Love adventure too.

What inspired your love for literature?

One thing that really helped me growing up as a child was that my Mother buys me books whenever she comes home from work after she noticed I loved reading. She bought me mostly story books.

Reading those books shaped and inspired me because I can this particular book she bought for me titled the "importance of Honesty", in the book the main character was punished for lying and stealing.

As a child the book was very instructive in letting me know that those vices are wrong and its consequences. The message really stuck with me and guided me while growing up.

Through that I learnt that storytelling helps to preserve and shape someone's mind , because many parents were not really physically present to guide us but the books I read helped to guide me.

What aspect of literature do you find most captivating?

I love writing African literature in the form of fiction.

Things I didn't experience but diving to the past in my imagination and bringing it to life through fiction.

Through some of the stories I read, I became interested and inspired to write to tell our stories for the next generation and for the people that are even present.

Knowing who we are can help us to go a long way in shaping our minds and inspiring others to make a positive change in our environment.

For Technology I see it as a tool for transformation , it makes life easier and bridges gaps and drives innovations from our phones to many other devices, connectivity, advantages of tech cannot be overemphasized.

Right now in Nigeria there is no hope that after graduation there is an office somewhere waiting for you to come and work.

Tech has really helped a lot of young people, even before graduation I've always seen Tech as a powerful tool for driving innovation.

What are the impacts of Adventure to the development of an economy?

Adventure represents growth, stepping out of your comfort zone exploring new ideas and pushing new boundaries. You get to learn other people's culture and how they live their lives.

It broadens your horizon so that you don't limit yourself to a particular way of life. With Adventure you get to travel and see other people's way of lives.

Especially how they behave and you get to learn from them and you see the opportunities you can gain from a particular environment.

When you gather these experiences you'll see that you are at more Advantage than someone that is just limited.

How will you describe the advent of social media on the Traditional reading culture and the business of writing ?

Generally as Africans the rise of social media has shifted the attention from books to digital contents.

Personally, from my own experience, I think there are initiatives that are helping to grow the reading culture especially among the young people is the reading of Audio books.

There's an app where you get to listen to the book's audio. What matters most is that this person is trying to maintain the reading culture. There are still a lot of people that I know that Love reading but it's still at a low level.

I feel we still need to work on it and host events that can help remind the younger people of the importance of reading and getting involved.

Though the Internet has its numerous advantages but has also created a problem because youths no longer want to read a whole lot of people are more interested in trends and gists on social media platforms.

People are no longer paying attention to things that matter. I can back then. I wasn't born in that era but I met that era where writers were being celebrated and we looked up to them as our role models and everyone wanted to be like them.

In this current era you can write and publish a book and when you want to launch it some people might not be willing to pay for it due to other pressing needs that they are facing.

They'll rather turn to social media to ease their stress rather than reading a book, but there are still people that appreciate reading even if they don't read there are still people that appreciate writers.

Recently, a small girl approached us at the mall with Copy of her book and a relative of mine bought a copy to appreciate her efforts though he wasn't interested in reading it.

How will you rate the reading culture in Enugu State?

Here in Enugu we have the Enugu Book Club that holds book festivals, workshops for writers and they invite writers from other places .

The Enugu book club is not limited to writers, we have Poets, Actors , we have people that are into public speaking. We also have the West Africa Broadcast and Media Academy (WABMA) , they are also part of the team. The Academy sponsors most of the book club's events and also donates money to winners of its competitions.

So our reading culture down here in Enugu is growing to an extent we are getting the we need.

How can parents or guardians inspire reading culture among their children?

Parents can get books for their kids and allocate days for them to narrate what they have read. They should make it fun and compulsory. They can also motivate their kids with rewards for those who are able to complete their books. This will motivate them to a large extent , even if they don't want to read they will be willing to due to the rewards.

As the child is growing they get used to it , they can also encourage them to bring their friends to come home and read.

Enugu state appears to have witnessed an improvement in Tourism and Entertainment, do you agree?

I think it's better now under the current Government. Enugu has always been known for its rich cultural heritage. The tourism sector has grown and the Commissioner is doing a lot but I still feel that there are a lot of untapped tourism potentials.

When you see some of the things they post I feel it's the popular places that we all know like the "Ngwo" pine forest, Nike Lake.

They should Tour different communities in the state. Historical places where they can find buildings that carry a lot of historical significance and value.

And other places where they can find artifacts, buildings, caves e.t.c that carry a lot of story and also get stories of individuals and their heroic deeds and document them for the current and generation. It's our story that's also part of what tourism entails

We have people who died as heroes and to an extent we don't even know some of them. We also have ancient buildings in Enugu that , if possible , we could have taken for preservation in the museum.

We need to discover those heroes that existed in our state and know their roots. For example, my grandfather was Christian Onoh, known as CC Onoh, at his House at his home town of Enugu Ngwo. Growing up I used to hear people say that the house was built by spirits.

But over the years till today the house is still standing. We need to visit places like that and tell the stories behind such structures. There's also a need to visit other communities in Enugu state and get to know people that did heroic things.

It's not just about Masquerades and installing their sculptures in public spaces like the Ijele Masquerade which was recently installed in Enugu.

I don't know if it originates from Enugu but there is a need to know which people are known for it.

You can go to the community, ask questions and uncover everything about it, and when you tell the story you are also entertaining them. That's why I said tourism and Entertainment go hand in hand.

There are still some artefacts that are yet to be discovered, so tourism shouldn't be limited to certain places. But yet Enugu state under the current Government is trying but there is a need for more investment.

Do you see the introduction of AI in Literature writing as a positive step?

AI is also revolutionising Literature in both positive and negative ways.

On one one hand it makes content creation easier by helping writers to generate creative ideas especially in editing.

AI Audio books and translation tools are also making Literature more accessible to different audiences but then there's a conden about authenticity and originality. AI can generate stories but it lacks emotions and lead experience.

So why I agree that AI is a great tool for enhancing literature. The best way to use AI is to see it as a complement to writing not a replacement. I don't think writers should rely heavily on AI when it comes to writing.

Prominent Anambra-born public affairs commentator, Paulinus Ezeokonkwo, has issued a ionate open letter to Senator Uche Ekwunife, urging her not to accept the role of deputy governorship candidate to Nicholas Ukachukwu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) flag-bearer for the November 8, 2025 Anambra State governorship election.

In the strongly worded letter titled "Iyom, Say No to Those Dragging You", released to the press on Wednesday Ezeokonkwo hailed Senator Ekwunife’s illustrious political career and warned that aligning with Ukachukwu could tarnish her hard-earned reputation.

“Life always has a way of canceling itself,”, “In your life, Distinguished Senator Uche Ekwunife, millions of Ndi Anambra and Nigerians in general have come to associate your name with success. Your name is synonymous with victories.” Ezeokonkwo wrote.

He recounted her meteoric rise from a successful banking career to legislative leadership, becoming one of the most influential politicians in Anambra State.

Ezeokonkwo highlighted her development strides as a former member of the House of Representatives and senator representing Anambra Central, noting that she was once rated the third-best performing senator in the 9th National Assembly.

However, the Ihiala-born writer warned Ekwunife against what he described as a potential misstep running alongside Nicholas Ukachukwu, whom he accused of having a checkered political and legal record.

He alleged that Ukachukwu is still facing court cases over a N120 billion embezzlement scandal dating back to his involvement in Nasarawa State politics during the istration of former Governor Abdullahi Adamu.

“This is a man whose only political victory came under questionable circumstances in Abuja in 1999,” Ezeokonkwo claimed. “He has contested elections in Anambra across nearly every political party PDP, APGA, APC, YPP and lost all.”, He said.

Ezeokonkwo emphasized that Ekwunife, widely known as Iyom, remains one of the most respected female politicians in the Southeast and should instead wait for the 2029 governorship race, when Anambra Central is more likely to produce the next governor.

“In 2029, it will be your time. You will still be under 60, and age is on your side,” he wrote. “Don't let them drag your golden name into the mud. Nicholas Chukwujekwu Ukachukwu is not a character you need to associate yourself with.”

Ezeokonkwo concluded his letter by calling on Ekwunife's ers to remain steadfast and reaffirmed that prayers and goodwill remain with her.

Ukachukwu emerged as APC’s candidate on April 6, 2025, after clinching the party’s ticket with 1,455 votes, far ahead of his closest rival, Valentine Ozigbo, who garnered just 67 votes. Other contenders included Johnbosco Onunkwo (26 votes) and Edozie Madu (8 votes). The results were announced by the Chairman of the APC Electoral Committee and Governor of Cross River State, Senator Bassey Otu.

Akpabio made the clarion call on Tuesday , urging his colleagues to execute their legislative duties with renewed moral clarity and a deep sense of national responsibility.

Speaking in the newly automated Red Hollow chamber at the National Assembly complex in Abuja, Akpabio emphasised the symbolic importance of the holy seasons that marked the recess period.

“Let them walk with us into this chamber, speak through our debates, and shine in the quality of the laws we make.”, He said.

Addressing the pressing issues facing the country, Akpabio acknowledged the rising cost of living, instability in the energy sector, and persistent insecurity, especially in the South-East, North-West, and North-Central regions.

The Nation's Number 3 citizen pointed out that these challenges require immediate and focused legislative for the efforts already being made by President Bola Tinubu’s istration.

“Our people look to us, not for rhetoric, but for rescue,” he stated. “But I believe that there is no river we cannot cross if we put our trust in God and faith in the people He has ordained to lead us, " Akpabio said.

The Senate President also pointed to the ongoing public discourse on electoral and judicial reform, emphasizing the Senate’s role in shaping Nigeria’s democratic future.

He reminded senators that the eyes of Nigerians and the international community are firmly fixed on the National Assembly.

“We are under watch,”,“No test must find us wanting. No challenge must catch us unprepared.”, Akpabio told his colleagues.

Akpabio enumerated a legislative agenda focused on national stability, with bills targeting security reforms, economic resilience, education, technology, and youth empowerment. He urged his colleagues to approach their duties with patriotism, integrity, and bipartisan commitment.

“Let us elevate debate over division. Let us govern with grace, not grudge,” he said.

In conclusion, he assured Nigerians that their Senate has returned to work with renewed determination.

“We have not forgotten your hopes, your hardships, or your hunger for change,”.

“We are here refreshed in spirit, renewed in resolve—to build a nation where peace is not an illusion, and progress is not a promise, but a pattern.”, Akpabio emphasised.

From Abuja, Kenneth Udeh

Leaders and stakeholders from the Abia North Senatorial District have publicly distanced themselves from any political coalition purportedly being formed against President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections.

Speaking under the auspices of the Abia North Peace Foundation during a press conference held in Umuahia, the leaders reaffirmed their unwavering for both President Tinubu and Senator Orji Uzor Kalu.

This is just as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on South-East Development Commission commenced the construction of an additional 2-kilometre stretch of the Umuzomgbo–Okpo Ihechiowa Road.

The Foundation's President Chief Nnanna Ukaegbu, alongside Prince Kalu Umeh, stated categorically that any such coalition “is dead on arrival,” emphasizing that Abia North stands firmly behind the current istration.

“We are not part of any plot against President Tinubu,” Chief Ukaegbu declared. “Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has consistently mobilised for Mr. President across Abia State and the South-East. His leadership is a blessing to our people.”

The Foundation praised Senator Kalu’s wide-ranging achievements, particularly in the area of infrastructure.

They cited several completed road projects including the Idima Abam Road in Arochukwu LGA, the Ndi Orieke Road in Ohafia LGA, the Alayi-Okafia Road, the Itumbauzo Road, and the Okai Item Road—all of which were previously in deplorable condition.

Prince Umeh highlighted the broader impact of these projects: “Today, thanks to Senator Kalu’s intervention, roads that were once imable have been rebuilt to modern standards, connecting communities and boosting local economies.”

Beyond roads, the leaders also commended Kalu’s contributions to education and youth empowerment, pointing to newly built classroom blocks in rural areas, scholarships for underprivileged students, and empowerment programs for women and youths across Abia North.

They further praised Senator Kalu for his role in uniting the Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing him as a bridge-builder and statesman whose political maturity has helped stabilize the party.

“Senator Kalu remains the best governor Abia has ever produced,” Chief Ukaegbu affirmed. “His time in office laid the foundation for the state’s development, and his continued service at the Senate is a testament to his enduring commitment to the people.”

As Senator Kalu expands his developmental footprint in rural Abia North with the new Umuzomgbo–Okpo road, both grassroots residents and elite stakeholders appear united in their —viewing him as a central pillar of stability, progress, and effective governance in the region.

In a related development residents of Umuzomgbo Ihechiowa in Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia State are set to benefit from another major infrastructural intervention as Senator Kalu kick started the construction of an additional 2-kilometre stretch of the Umuzomgbo–Okpo Ihechiowa Road.

This new project follows the successful completion of a 2.4-kilometre road in the same community, making it a combined 4.4-kilometre boost to local transportation infrastructure.

When our correspondent visited the area, construction work was already in progress, drawing praise from residents who described Senator Kalu as a transformative figure. “Senator Kalu is a miracle worker,” said Mr. Agwu Okoro, a community member. “What we thought was impossible, he has made possible. This road will change our lives.”

Mrs. Mary Kalu, a local farmer, re-echoed this sentiment: “We are grateful to Senator Orji Uzor Kalu for ing Umuzomgbo Ihechiowa. His intervention has brought hope and development to our people.”

Prince Okorie Awa, a youth leader, emphasized the broader impact of the project; “This road is moving toward Okpo-Ihechiowa, and it will give us access to neighbouring communities. This means economic growth, better access to markets, and a general uplift for our youth. We sincerely thank Senator Kalu.”

"The ongoing construction of the 2KM extension is expected to further integrate the community into the broader Arochukwu LGA road network, improving mobility, trade, and quality of life for residents.

Ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Abia Progressive Frontiers (APF), a prominent political group, has called on voters in the Ohafia and Arochukwu Local Government Areas to resist the temptation of voting based on religion or local government origins.

Focusing on the House of Representatives race for the constituency, the group urged electorates to prioritize candidates' competence, ability, and proven track records over sentimental considerations.

APF further tasked voters with demanding tangible evidence of achievements from incumbent political leaders seeking re-election, insisting that elected officials must be held to higher standards of performance and service.

These were among the key resolutions outlined in a communiqué issued after a three-day APC retreat held in Ohafia LGA, signed by the group’s coordinator, Ogbonna Augustine, on Sunday.

The group emphasized the need for voters to remain politically conscious during the 2027 elections, stressing the importance of selecting credible representatives who can effectively advocate for the constituency's interests in the House of Representatives, rather than choosing candidates solely based on their local government of origin.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the current representation, APF lamented the lack of visible impact from their representative when compared to neighboring constituencies. They decried the continued neglect of numerous pressing challenges and noted that the constituency's voice in the National Assembly has been weakened.

The group urged voters to critically evaluate all candidates, demanding comprehensive development plans and verifiable action strategies for the growth and advancement of the region.

"We must resist the temptation to be influenced by primordial sentiments of ethnicity and religion in the forthcoming elections," APF stated.

"Voters should demand the results and scorecards of incumbents seeking reelection and require first-time candidates to present realistic and workable action plans.

" of the House of Representatives owe it as a duty to complement the efforts of the Senators and Governors but unfortunately it's a sad tale in Ohafia and Arochukwu and that must change come 2027.

"It is no longer about where you come from but about your competence and track record, APF stated.

Highlighting the disparity in infrastructure development and empowerment initiatives between their constituency and others, APF criticized political officeholders who have failed to deliver on their promises, while commending those who have lived up to expectations.

They stressed that the major cause of misgovernance in the country is the persistent tendency to vote along religious and ethnic lines, rather than adhering to the true principles of democracy.

Comprising lawyers, community leaders, technocrats, youths, and women leaders, the APF also announced plans to launch a mass voter orientation campaign ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“We also explored how the REA can back alternative energy solutions for key infrastructure projects planned for rollout soon.

“The SEDC is fully committed to collaborating with the REA as a regional implementation partner to address the electricity shortages that hinder the South East’s development”, Okoye said.

In his response, REA’s Abba Aliyu assured Okoye that the Southeast would fully benefit from the Federal Government’s energy initiatives. He pledged the agency’s commitment to working closely with the SEDC to realize its electrification goals.

Claims made by Kogi Central Lawmaker, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan that she was removed from her position as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Local Content due to her influence in the siting of Five Mini LNG Plants in Ajaokuta, Kogi State has been described as completely false.

The clarification was made by the Senate through the Chairman of its Committee on Gas, Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe in a press statement personally signed by the Senator in Abuja on Sunday.

Jarigbe dismissed the Claims following the backdrop of the dramatic face-off between the female Lawmaker and Senate President Akpabio on the floor of the Senate during Thursday's plenary over the change of her sitting position which the Lawmaker vehemently protested against.

Natasha who later spoke on Friday during a telephone interview on a live human rights radio show, popularly known as ‘Brekete Family’ on Human Rights Radio in Abuja among other claims alleged that she was removed as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Local Content due to her influence in siting of Five Mini LNG Plants in Ajaokuta, Kogi State.

However, reacting to the news reports generated by the Lawmaker's statements on Radio, Jarigbe described Natasha's statement as completely false and baseless.

The Gas Committee Chairman stated that contrary to Natasha's claim, neither herself nor the entire Senate including the Federal Government's Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) had any influence in the setting up of the aforementioned Gas Plants in Ajaokuta, Kogi State.

According to Jarigbe the five Mini LNG Plants in question Prime LNG, NGML/Gasnexus LNG, BUA LNG, Highland LNG, and LNG Arete are private sector-driven initiatives and are not Federal Government projects.

Jarigbe added that the decision to locate the LNG plants was solely decided by the Private Investors after they carefully assessed the economic viability, availability of a gas pipeline, and access to Gas for the effective functioning of the Plants.

He described the misconception that the siting of these projects in Ajaokuta was done at the behest of Senator Natasha Akpoti Uduaghan as completely erroneous and unfounded.

Furthermore, Jarigbe explained that though Natasha was invited to the project's engagements, her invite was not different from other of the National Assembly and their presence regardless of their positions had in no way indicated undue influence in the siting of the projects.

The statement read partly;

"The claim that her role or involvement in the siting of the LNG plants played a part in her replacement is categorically incorrect.

"As Chairman of the Senate Committee on Gas, I have received numerous inquiries from concerned Nigerians questioning why Ajaokuta was selected as the site for these Plants.

"Private investors make decisions based on the profitability and sustainability of their investments, not political affiliations or considerations.

Urging his colleagues to be of good conduct, Jarigbe also reminded that immunity being enjoyed by the Senators ends within the confines of the Senate Chambers

He said;

"There is no protection or immunity outside the Chamber, and we must exercise restraint and circumspection in our speeches and actions.

"Our behavior and words must reflect the dignity and responsibility vested in us by the people of Nigeria. The Law does not provide immunity for a Senator who defames anyone.

"Finally, I urge my distinguished colleagues to review and adhere to the Senate Standing Orders and to conduct ourselves in a manner that upholds the sanctity of the Senate and the high office we hold.
