A northern advocacy group under the Renewed Hope Agenda has condemned recent calls for the suspension of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, describing the allegations against him as politically motivated and unfounded. At a press briefing held Monday in Abuja, the group’s National Coordinator, Comrade Prince Miaphen, criticized the media attacks purportedly orchestrated by a faceless coalition. Miaphen accused the group of acting as proxies for disgruntled political actors intent on destabilizing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s istration. “This campaign of calumny is nothing but a coordinated blackmail against a loyal and hardworking public servant. Senator Akume has remained a steady hand in the implementation of the Renewed Hope Agenda,” Miaphen said. He dismissed allegations that Senator Akume had obstructed investigations into an alleged N80 billion fraud involving one Mr. Torhile Uchi, whom the accs claim is his aide. According to Miaphen, the Northern Bridge Builders’ Forum—a coalition of respected leaders in the region—has clarified that Uchi neither works for the SGF nor is linked to the alleged fraud. Miaphen also cited a recent attack by a self-styled Afenifere faction, which was discredited by the authentic leadership of the Yoruba socio-political group. “These are orchestrated moves by political saboteurs who fear the success of President Tinubu’s istration,” he said. Praising Akume’s track record, Miaphen described him as “a man of integrity and loyalty” who has served Nigeria with distinction—as Governor, Senator, Minister, and now SGF. He stressed that Akume's coordination of federal policies has been critical to the functionality of the current government. “The SGF is the engine room of this istration. His commitment to ensuring that the Renewed Hope Agenda delivers real benefits to Nigerians is unwavering,” he stated. The group also urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) not to yield to political pressure, commending the commission for its professionalism so far and warning against the use of the anti-graft agency for political vendettas. In a final note, Miaphen expressed the group’s continued for Senator Akume and President Tinubu. “We a strong vote of confidence in Senator Akume and thank President Tinubu for standing by a man of principle and competence. Nigerians must remain united and not be swayed by false narratives,” he said. He called on citizens to remain vigilant and efforts aimed at strengthening governance, saying, “This is not a time for distractions. We stand firmly behind those working to build a better Nigeria.”

Covenant University is facing public scrutiny following the death of Professor Joseph Olugbuyiro, a former staff member whose appointment was allegedly terminated in 2024, without the payment of his terminal benefits. A close colleague, Samuel Tuesday Owoeye, broke the news in an emotional post on social media, accusing the university of subjecting him and others to untold hardship by withholding their entitlements for over eight months. “My brother and colleague, you couldn’t survive the shock,” Owoeye wrote. He added that “Covenant University terminated our appointment in September 2024 and gave us three weeks to vacate our residence… not because we violated any regulations, but to bring down the wage bill.” Davido, Asa to perform at NSF opening ceremony in Ogun Customs generates N15bn revenue in Ogun He further alleged that while the sack was painful but tolerable, the greater injustice was the university's prolonged refusal to settle their benefits. “As I make this post, they are still devising how to cut, cut, cut… It is now over eight months and the organization we spent almost half of our lifetime to serve doesn’t care if we go and die. Of course, you have gone and now you have died untimely,” he lamented. Owoeye recalled their last conversation on May 4, 2025, where both men discussed the harsh economic realities facing them. Adding a spiritual note, he quoted Jeremiah 17:9 to describe the betrayal they felt: “The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked: who can know it.” Owoeye expressed fear that even in death, his colleague might still be shortchanged. “I am sure Covenant University will now call your next of kin and pay him/her what they like and not what you are entitled to receive. God will judge the wicked,” he concluded. University yet to speak Efforts to reach Covenant University for official comment on the allegations have so far been unsuccessful. Multiple calls made to the university’s Registrar's office went unanswered as of press time. Also a spokesperson of the school simply identified as Chichi busied a call put through to her line by our correspondent and requested that a text message should be sent. When there was no response to the text messages, she was ed via WhatsApp yet no response was received. The institution, known for its strict disciplinary culture and Christian ethos, has not released any public statement regarding the alleged termination of Professor Olugbuyiro’s appointment or the claims of unpaid benefits affecting former staff. Chancellor of Covenant University, Dr. David Oyedepo Netizens react with grief and outrage The post has, however, triggered an outpouring of grief and indignation online. Many commenters, including former staff, shared similar experiences of alleged maltreatment and unpaid benefits. Joshua Israel Jonah Odubele recalled a similar ordeal: “The same thing done to us in 2020 after the COVID-19 break… Some of us are dead, but I give thanks to God who has sustained the rest of us.” Solomon Nwankwo, a former student, expressed sorrow and revealed a disturbing pattern. “My dad is still being owed till today and he is late too… Thanks for the good treatment you gave me in school. May your gentle soul rest in peace.” Others like Omoyele Enoch Olufemi, criticized what they called hypocrisy within religious institutions: “The same people will come out and preach prosperity with this high level of wickedness.” Ola Honesty noted, “Some of the things we are allowed to see are just facades. May the good Lord keep you and comfort the family of your late colleague.” Amid the emotional tributes, George S. John offered a sobering reflection: “When the man was alive and calling, how many people answered him? But now he is gone… it’s a very painful exit.” The incident has sparked fresh calls for ability and justice within religious-d institutions, with many urging Covenant University to uphold the values it professes.

The Federal Government is set to launch 10,000 housing units under the Renewed Hope Medic City mass housing initiative, targeted at medical and healthcare workers across the country. This move is part of a broader effort to enhance welfare and sustainability in the healthcare sector. The announcement was made at a stakeholders’ interactive engagement meeting held in Abuja yesterday, which brought together the Real Estate Developers Association of Nigeria (REDAN) and representatives of professional health associations and unions. The event was organized by the Renewed Hope Housing Initiative for Medical and Healthcare Workers. In a welcome remarks, Chairman of the initiative, Dr. Aliyu Oroji Wammako, who was represented by Mrs Mercy Iyortyer, the Deputy President of REDAN,said the project is aligned with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Housing Agenda—championed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and driven by the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Alhaji Ahmed Dangiwa. He explained that the programme aims to address the alarming trend of medical professionals leaving the country, popularly referred to as the “Japa syndrome.” Wammako warned that Nigeria’s healthcare sector is at a critical crossroads. “Over the years, we have witnessed an alarming exodus of doctors, nurses, and other healthcare personnel seeking better opportunities abroad. This brain drain continues to weaken our healthcare system and deprive the nation of vital expertise needed to build a healthier and more resilient future,” he said. He cited poor access to affordable housing, challenging working conditions, and limited professional growth opportunities as major factors driving the mass migration—issues that require urgent intervention. According to him, the initiative is designed to provide affordable, high-quality housing to healthcare workers nationwide, thereby promoting stability and encouraging them to remain in the country. “This is not just a housing project; it is a national commitment to honouring those who dedicate their lives to the wellbeing of others,” he added. Looking ahead, Wammako expressed hope for a Nigeria where doctors, nurses, and other health professionals feel recognised, ed, and empowered through access to affordable housing and conducive living environments. “This initiative reflects President Tinubu’s vision of Renewed Hope—a vision where every citizen, regardless of profession, has the opportunity to thrive,” he said. Also speaking, the President and Chairman of REDAN, Prince Akintoye Adeoye, described the initiative as a landmark effort to provide affordable and dignified housing for healthcare professionals nationwide. “As one of the highest contributors to the National Housing Fund, medical workers deserve priority in housing delivery efforts to help retain talent in the sector and reduce the growing trend of professional migration abroad, popularly called the brain drain or Japa syndrome,” he said. He emphasized that REDAN is committed to a vision that goes beyond construction. “We aim to build systems of delivery that are bankable, transparent, and sustainable. From planning to funding, and from delivery to occupancy, each step must reflect a shared sense of purpose and responsibility,” Adeoye said. On his part, the National Coordinator of the Renewed Hope Housing Initiative for Medical and Healthcare Workers, Dr. Suleiman Abubakar Sadiq, said the initiative would be demand-driven to ensure effective planning and allocation. “We have a responsibility to monitor and evaluate the implementation to ensure that structural standards are upheld. These houses will be allocated to qualified beneficiaries through a smooth and transparent process,” he stated. He noted that more than 16,000 doctors have migrated out of Nigeria in the past five years. Quoting recent reports, he said the Minister of Health, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, lamented that out of 90,000 doctors ed in Nigeria, only 55,000 are currently practicing in the country. “Additionally, about 15,000 nurses reportedly left Nigeria in 2023 alone. The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria has also reported that 5,208 pharmacists have left the country in the last five years in search of greener pastures,” Sadiq added. He warned that the exodus has caused a brain drain crisis, pushing the healthcare sector toward collapse due to poor wages, inadequate welfare, poor working conditions, lack of infrastructure, and limited job satisfaction. To address this, Sadiq revealed that the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN) will provide the houses to beneficiaries through a rent-to-own scheme at a subsidised mortgage rate of 6% per annum, with repayment spread over up to 30 years. “This is five times lower than the mortgage rates of up to 30% per annum charged by some commercial institutions,” he said.

A group under the umbrella of the Concerned Abuja Indigenes has expressed ‘serious concern’ about alleged ongoing intimidation, harassment and threat against protesters in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). In a statement on Thursday, Ayedo Danjuma Abdul, on behalf of the body, expressed dismay by the continued "violent" suppression of citizens exercising their constitutional right to protest. Given instances, Abdul said: "Most recently, security forces launched an unprovoked attack on the End Bad Governance protest, demonstrating their intolerance to citizens demanding good governance. "Similarly, during the Arba’een Symbolic Trek by the Islamic movement, security operatives opened fire on peaceful marchers, killing two people, injuring many others, and arresting dozens without due process. Those arrested during the Arba’een Symbolic Trek continue to languish in prison without fair trial, an outright violation of their fundamental human rights. "The latest act of brutality came during the International Quds Day protest organised by the Islamic movement in Nigeria, where an elite brigade, the Guards brigade, which is tasked with protecting Nigeria's high-ranking officials and are only answerable to the president used all sorts of weapons including Armour Vehicles to shoot on protesters carrying only placards and chanting slogans that shows solidarity with the People of Gaza, shooting that a human cannot survive it. They killed many, arrested hundreds, and left several with severe injuries. These barbaric actions have led to the tragic loss of many innocent lives, including Abuja indigenes who were merely going about their daily businesses. We say enough is enough!" He added that "It is unacceptable for Abuja indigenes to stand by and watch while security agencies violate fundamental human rights to serve foreign interests rather than the interests of Nigerians. We will not allow non-indigenes to turn Abuja into a battlefield at the expense of our people’s safety and well-being. "We demand justice and ability. We call on the United Nation's Human rights Council to immediately launch an independent investigation into these attacks, bring the culprits to book, and ensure that such violations never happen again. "Those responsible for these killings, injuries, and illegal detentions must face the full weight of the law. "The Concerned Abuja Indigenes will not relent in defending the rights of the people. We stand firm in rejecting the militarisation of our city and the brutalisation of innocent citizens. We urge all well-meaning Nigerians, human rights organizations, and the international community to speak up against these atrocities and demand justice." |

Ahead of the politics of 2027, a pressure group, Team New Nigeria (TNN), says it is planning to transform into a political party. Briefing newsmen in Abuja on Sunday, Modibbo Yakubun Farakwai, President of TNN, also accused the All Progressives Congress-led federal government of failing Nigerians to achieve a viable front of eliminating hunger, poverty and insecurity in the country. Farakwai therefore sought from Nigerians to in forming a solid political party. "In our present state, it is no longer sufficient to sit on the sidelines and offer suggestions, which are most likely to be ignored, we must stand up and be involved in an effort that will prevent our dear nation from derailing. "Therefore, following extensive nationwide consultations with stakeholders and other interested Nigerians, we clearly realised that there emanated an overwhelming desire to form a broad-based political party to genuinely provide a platform for involving Nigerians in the transformation of their Country into a positive future for all, free from the injustice of corruption, anti-democratic values, insecurity and hopelessness," he said. He added that "in the coming weeks, a national rollout of plans will happen in the TNN, the first of which is the National Conference which is scheduled to take place on the 5th of April, 2025 in Abuja. There, we will formally make public presentation of the TNN's Manifesto and Constitution." Coalition of Civil Society Groups for Peace, Security, Good Governance, Equity and Justice, has picked hole in the sexual harassment claim by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. Its Spokesperson, James Okoronkwo at a press conference yesterday in Abuja, questioned the sincerity in Akpoti-Uduaghan's claim after she was removed as chairperson of the Senate Committee on Local Content. Okoronkwo advised the Kogi State senator to own up to her misconduct of disobeying the senate rules by refusing to accept her seat allocation. He likened Akpoti-Uduaghan's claim to the biblical Pontius Wife and Joseph, stating that no amount of blackmail would deter the senate from carrying out its statutory function. He said: "Like the biblical Pontius wife did to Joseph, Sen Natasha turned the well- intended istrative norm of rearranging sitting position in the Senate into an issue of rancor and vituperation when she against every persuasion refused to accept the sit allocated to her. "In expression of unprovoked anger she threw cation and common sense to the winds and randomly violated Senate rules. "Firstly, she refused to take the sit allocated to her, secondly, she broke the protocol and spoke when the presiding officer has not asked her to do so and thirdly she used foul language in addressing the Senate to the extent of abusing the presiding officer. "We urge her to stop distracting the Nigerian Senate as our nation has more serious issues demanding legislative action." On the Senate President, he said "Akpabio is committed to enhancing the 35 percent affirmative action and all barriers inhibiting women participation in politics."

Children are no longer interested in reading and writing, the founder of Stark Pages Literally Students' Initiative, a not-for-profit organization, Dianah Ngamdy, has said. Briefing newsmen yesterday in Abuja on the sidelines of a sensitization programme on creative writing for secondary school students, Ngamdy said her team's mission among others was to engage students in workshops and coaching sessions in secondary schools across Nigeria. She said her organization had launched a competition inviting secondary school students to submit prose and poetry. "We have launched a competition inviting submissions in prose and poetry from secondary school students across the country. "Prizes will be won by the top three winners and corresponding prizes for their respective schools after the submissions have gone through a screening process," she said. According to her, the top 50 submissions will be published in an anthology with the bios of each student in photobook. She said: "It's something we want to continue. This is the first one we're doing, but it's something we are going to continue. "We want to have several volumes of submissions from students." On what motivated the initiative, she said: "I saw poetry London. They are, I think, the 129th volume of submission. And these are not with secondary school, but submissions from all over. "But I realized when I was much younger that the secondary school students are at the pace where their creative juices are pumping, but they need to be stirred in the right direction before they lose sight of it. "That's why my focus is on the secondary school students before they go to university and get distracted. We just want to catch them young. "We want them to open their eyes to the opportunities. We're not trying to take them away from the core of what they want to study or whatever they want to do with their lives. We want them to realize that writing is something they can still do. "Whether you're a doctor, a lawyer, an ant, you can still be a writer." Continuing, she said: "There are a few kids writing. If we encourage them, they'll keep writing, and people around that small space will read, and hopefully it just expands.”

Alhaji Aliyu Oroji Wamakko, former President of the Real Estate Developers Association of Nigeria (REDAN), has expressed concerns over the Federal Government's allocation of N150 billion to the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI) real estate investment fund. In a statement Wamakko said he believes this decision undermines critical institutions like the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN), which remains severely underfunded. He commended the ongoing discourse on Nigeria’s housing deficit but stressed the need for a more strategic allocation of resources. “The Federal Mortgage Bank currently operates on a capital base of just N2.5 billion—an amount woefully inadequate for an institution tasked with providing mortgages in a country with a housing deficit exceeding 37 million units,” he said. The FMBN heavily relies on the 2.5% contributions from workers under the National Housing Fund (NHF), a model Wamakko deems unsustainable. He highlighted the bank’s struggle with basic operational needs, from maintaining nationwide offices to managing supplies, and argued that expecting the FMBN to deliver affordable housing and mortgages under such conditions is simply not feasible. “If the Federal Government is advancing its Renewed Hope Housing Initiative, it must prioritise the recapitalisation of the FMBN,” Wamakko asserted. He pointed out that over 4.3 million Nigerians have contributed to the NHF for the past 30 years, yet the bank lacks the capital to fulfill its mandate. Wamakko proposed two clear paths forward: either channel funds directly to the Federal Ministry of Housing or inject capital into the FMBN. He emphasized that the Renewed Hope Housing Initiative, which aims to deliver 500,000 housing units annually, is achievable with the right financial backing. He also questioned the decision to position the Minister of Finance to oversee housing provision and mortgages, given the existence of a dedicated Minister of Housing and the FMBN. “Nigeria faces multifaceted challenges—insurgency, banditry, floods, fires, and urban-rural migration—all of which exacerbate the housing crisis. These issues demand a focused and well-funded response,” Wamakko said. He, therefore, urged the government to redirect resources to the appropriate authorities to ensure the Renewed Hope Agenda translates into tangible results for Nigerians. “The housing deficit is a national emergency, and with proper funding, we can turn the tide. The will is there, the expertise is available—now, the funds must follow,” he stated.

The leadership of the Movement for the Survival of the Izon Ethnic Nationality in the Niger Delta (MOSIEND) has congratulated the executive governor of Delta State, Rt. Honourable Sheriff Oborevwori, for emerging winner of the 2024 ThisDay/Arise Governor of the Year award. MOSIEND said the prestigious award given the governor was due to his outstanding achievements in office in less than two years, saying that this was greatly influenced by his exceptional leadership style ranging from fiscal discipline and infrastructural development of the state. The group, in a statement signed by its National Vice President, Chief Comrade Thompson Fuoye Robert, said the recognition given the governor on Monday night in Lagos was well-deserved, and vowed to throw more behind his istration. According to the statement, Governor Oborevwori is one man who has managed the monies of the state prudently, being the only governor who has not borrowed a dime from anywhere to run the affairs of the state. It says this is very unusual because almost all the governors have taken loans one way or another; thereby plunging their states into more debts - a cancerous epidemic destroying the future of many nations. It says, "Governor Sheriff Oborevwori was measured at the prudent level of using what he has to develop the state, rather than going to borrow and put the state in more debts." "Everybody understands that his predecessor has left a lot of burdens on the state which, ordinary, should be yardsticks for him to borrow money, but he chose to not borrow, rather, he is using what he has to develop the state." "Don't forget that even as it is, our former oga will still be collecting his own chunk, and yet, Oborevwori has refused to take any loan." "Despite refusing to take loans, the man is still developing the state. Don't forget, even those two major bridges alone, to be able to award those kinds of contracts in Warri alone in the first year, it is not an easy task, and the work is going on steadily - a high profile construction firm like Julius Berger, you know what it means." "And if you go to our Ijaw Communities, projects are going on - Ayakorumo Bridge is ongoing - they are working there. In Asaba, almost all the link roads, they are working there. In Udu, Isoko, they are constructing roads, everywhere." "The Road from Asaba through Ozoro to Ughelli, they are working there 24 hours, whether you like it or not, it may not translate to the fact that he's doing well well well, but at least, in the past one year, he has been able to show capacity." "So, that is the measurement they used, and we agree with ThisDay totally, because when we look at those two major projects in Warri alone, you know - some people fit do am for four years." "If the governor continues at this pace or improves on it, definitely, his first tenure will bring a lot of good to the state because he has shown that he's not only doing this within the Okpe axis where he is from, but he has tried to centralized major projects across the three senatorial districts of the state." "He has shown that he is not a governor that believes in developing his area first, and with all these, we know he will come out well in his first tenure." "We are also urging everybody - all political actors, whether opposition or not to understand that the time for elections is gone, and we now have a governor who is doing well, everybody should hands together and him." "When the time for election comes, they are free to talk and castigate him, but for now, the man is doing well and everybody should him; that's what MOSIEND is saying." "As an organization that is unbiased and a group that doesn't want to praise-sing anybody, we are calling for more for him because from our follow-up on him so far, and after carefully analyzing the ThisDay Governor of the Year Award he just won, it is evident that he has gotten himself a good score so far in one year going to two years in this office." "We are sure that if they give him more , he is going to do better, and as MOSIEND, we are throwing all our weight behind him to make sure his istration succeeds." "After a thorough check of the award given to him, we discovered that he merited the award because he has constantly paid civil servants, he has also ensured that pensions are paid timely. "Our fact check shows that he's executing different developmental projects in the three senatorial districts, and for these reasons, we want to congratulate him that he has done well," the statement adds.

By Taiwo George It was in the heat of the day’s activities that the news filtered in that a new Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC) had emerged at the Lagos State University (LASU); and it was no other person than the cerebral Prof Oseni Taiwo Afisi. The first person I called was Dr Adeolu Oyekan, my lecturer turned bosom friend. “It’s true,” he confirmed to me, disclosing that he had just ended a phone conversation with the second most senior official in LASU hierarchy. I rang Prof to congratulate him but he was on another call. After reading my WhatsApp message much later, he called back. “George!” to which I replied, “DVC, sir, Congratulations!” The conversation was brief but it left me inspired. Prof Afisi has broken a record and set a standard. In the history of LASU, no lecturer from Philosophy department has risen to this enviable height. The new DVC was one of the lecturers who taught me in my undergraduate days. We were in our sophomore year when our paths first crossed. One thing that stood him out back then was his demeanour and approach to life. A six-footer, the youthful lecturer would joke while teaching us Logic. My friend, Osho Ayodele Benedict, who later became President of our Department, was closer to Prof than I; and together we would joke about who would get a higher grade in the course, which we previously loathed. Philosophers are wrongly perceived as boring people, perhaps because of the ascetic nature to life. However, Prof changed that perception among his students through his irable dress sense. I can honestly say that the relationship with lecturers was not so cordial in my time, or to paraphrase one of my lecturers who in a recent tribute to a deceased student said he had never “been lucky with ex-students”. In my own case, I have not been lucky with my lecturers, save for the likes of Prof Afisi, Dr Oyekan and a select few. That reminds me of a sad episode that would only leave my mind the day I leave this world. As a legacy, Osho put together a symposium to mark the end of his tenure as Departmental President but rather than commend him for the laudable initiative, he almost landed in trouble. Here was a programme that brought renowned names within and outside Philosophy such as Prof Jim Unah; Prof T U Nwala; Femi Adesina, then Managing Director of The Sun Newspaper, among others, but we were told that we didn’t secure enough approval to host such event – the first and only of its kind in the department in the four/five years I spent, but Prof was one of the few persons who interceded on our behalf and assured us that all would be well. More than a decade later, Dr Olajide Obi, also a fantastic lecturer at the Department of Philosophy, LASU, linked me up with some current students there. I took interest in the election that threw up Zainab Adeola Bakare, the incumbent Departmental President, and one of the names she kept mentioning in of encouragement and was Prof Afisi. It didn’t come as a surprise for he has proven over time to be a man who values his students and keeps relationship with them. In 2019 when my wife and I welcomed our first child, I was off to work the next day. Although the joy of becoming a father wanted to make me sit back at the hospital, reality dawned on me that I was to preside over an editorial meeting. I was in the middle of that meeting when my wife sent a message that Prof Afisi and Dr Oyekan were at the hospital. I was touched. How many lecturers would show such care to former students, especially in a setting when the knife and yam is perceived to be in one hand? An incident which happened last week showed that, certainly there are lecturers like Prof Afisi out there. Some Obafemi Awolowo University students took time to celebrating a lecturer, Dr Ezekiel Olagunju, and they posted the video online. Amid the outpouring of love, Dr Olagunju broke down in tears. In an interview he granted after that incident, the lecturer opened up on why he treats his students the way he does. “I believe students are like blank sheets of paper. As a lecturer, it’s my duty to fill those sheets with knowledge. If you don’t teach them, they won’t learn. It’s a collaborative process. What they learn from one lecturer combines with what they learn from others to shape them into successful individuals. “My principle is to ensure I teach my portion of the curriculum thoroughly so there are no gaps in their learning. I also focus on creating an environment conducive to learning. For instance, in primary school, if you teach Mathematics with a cane in your hand, students are more likely to give wrong answers out of fear. “Similarly, in language teaching, I make sure my students are relaxed and happy in the classroom. When they’re comfortable, their minds and hearts are open, and they’re more ready to learn. Some students may come in with the mindset that the subject is difficult, but by interacting with me and experiencing a positive atmosphere, they develop the readiness to succeed.” Someday. Prof Afisi would tell us his own story too. The task before the new DVC is daunting and I have no doubt that he would succeed. As Head of Department, he attracted so many benefits to the department including organizing a UNESCO (MOST) Syndicated Workshop which put not just the department in the spotlight but LASU as well. In 2018, he also organised a Karl Popper for Africa International Conference at the university. I had the opportunity to attend that programme ed by the Karl Popper Charitable Trust, United Kingdom. It was at that programme anchored by Prof Henry Hunjo, who I have fond memories of, that I heard the slogan, “We are LASU, We Are Proud.” In our days on campus, the slogan was “Greatest gba gba” WHO IS PROF AFISI? Prof. Oseni Taiwo Afisi was born on 15th July, 1974, to the Afisi-Shokun-Agbajegoriite-Onilegbale Royal House of Isale-Eko, Lagos Island, Lagos State, Nigeria. Prof. Afisi grew up in Mushin, Lagos, Nigeria and started his early education at Ajenifuja Primary School, Ilupeju, Odi-olowo, Mushin, Lagos State in 1980, He proceeded to Ilupeju College, Ilupeju, Odi-olowo, Mushin, Lagos State, Nigeria, where he obtained his West African School Certificate in 1992. Prof. Oseni Taiwo Afisi had his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Philosophy from the University of Lagos, Nigeria, in 1998. He had his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) at the Lagos State Model College, Obadore, Lagos State, from 1998 to 1999, then had his Master of Arts Degree in Philosophy from the University of Lagos, Nigeria in 2002. He later proceeded to the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, where he obtained a Ph.D. degree in Philosophy in 2014. Prof. Afisi ed the services of Lagos State University as an Assistant Lecturer in March 2007. He became an Associate Professor of Philosophy in 2020 and a Professor of Philosophy in 2023. He specialises in philosophy of science, logic, and critical rationalism. Prof. Afisi is the first indigenous professor of philosophy in the Department of Philosophy at Lagos State University. Prof. Oseni Afisi was Head of the Department of Philosophy, LASU from March 2019 to October 2021. He was appointed as the first Director of Special Interventions in October 2021 by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello. He was also appointed as Coordinator, LASU Ventures Ltd, in March 2024. Both positions he held until his election as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics) of Lagos State University. Prof. Afisi has authored and co-authored over 60 scientific papers and journal articles, including over 20 chapter contributions in books. He is the editor of the book: Karl Popper and Africa: Knowledge, Politics and Development, published by Springer in 2021. He has won several academic awards and grants among which were the 2023 Institutional Based Research (IBR) Grant awarded by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND); the 2021 Hannah Arendt Humanities Network (HAHN) Annual Text Seminar Award at the Bard College, New York. A member of Philosophical Association of Nigeria (PAN), he has been nominated as a resource person at several times to participate in the National University Commission accreditation and resource assessment exercises to different Nigerian universities. Prof. Oseni Taiwo Afisi has attended conferences, workshops, and technical meetings in many countries, which include New Zealand, Australia, USA, Brazil, United Kingdom, Austria, Tanzania and Ghana. The last time someone I knew from the Faculty of Arts became DVC was about two decades ago when Prof T A Amosu of French Department occupied that office. Prof Amosu carried himself with so much dignity and iration. I dedicating a column to him in my space on Campus Wick, a defunct publication that exposed me to the world of journalism back in school. Prof Afisi has the opportunity to take it a notch higher and I am confident that he would succeed. In The Republic, one of the most important dialogues of Plato, an ancient Greek philosopher, said the best form of government is that in which philosophers rule. Plato was less concerned about people sitting on thrones wearing glittering crowns, but was talking more about people who prioritize rational reflections occupying important positions that affect the society. May your tenure bring good fortune to LASU, Prof. May your enemies fail as they have always failed during your journey to the top. Ejire arai sokun, akaba Ogo oni se mo e lese. Omo Aromi sa legbe legbe. Mo yo fun e, mo yo fun ara mi. Bi oju o ba ti ehin igbeti, oju o ni t'eko ile. George, a graduate of the Department of Philosophy, LASU, is one of the Editors at Daily Trust Newspaper.

The business landscape in Nigeria is witnessing a major shift as Atusbulk launches its game-changing communication platform in Abuja, tackling head-on the messaging headaches that have plagued Nigerian businesses for years. Speaking at the launch event in Abuja yesterday, Hon. Ismaila Yusuf Atus reflected on the challenges businesses face: "I've watched countless businesses struggle with juggling multiple apps and platforms just to reach their customers. Think about it - one platform for SMS, another for WhatsApp, and yet another for email. It's like trying to drive three cars at once. We're changing that story today." Discussing market research findings, Atus revealed startling statistics: "When we looked at the market data, we found that businesses were losing nearly one-third of their potential revenue simply because they couldn't effectively communicate with their customers. That's not just numbers on a page - that's real money being left on the table by hardworking Nigerian entrepreneurs." Describing the platform's impact on small businesses, Atus shared his observations: "What excites me most is seeing small business owners' faces light up when they realize they can now do what only big corporations could do before. A mama put owner can now schedule her daily menu broadcasts, a boutique owner can showcase new arrivals, and a bookshop can alert students about new stock - all from one simple dashboard." Addressing the platform's core benefits, Atus emphasized: "We're not just selling software. We're giving Nigerian businesses their time back. Time they can spend growing their business instead of wrestling with technology." The platform's impact on Nigeria's economy promises to be substantial. With projected indirect job creation exceeding 10,000 and a 45% reduction in communication costs, Atusbulk is positioned to fuel significant economic growth. Sharing his vision for Nigeria's future, Atus concluded: "This isn't just about making business easier. It's about empowering every Nigerian entrepreneur to compete in today's digital economy. When they succeed, Nigeria succeeds." For more information about transforming your business communication, their Abuja headquarters. *Signed:* Atusbulk Media Team

The former REDAN Boss said a lot of petition has been written against the Managing Director Moure Consult Ltd, Sadiq Dalhatu Ado for fraudulent tendencies and breach of agreement with his victims. He said some the victims of Sadiq Dalhatu Ado had written formally to relevant agencies to address their grievances and highlight the fraudulent tendencies exhibited by Moure Consult Ltd, under the leadership of the Managing Director, Sadiq Dalhatu Ado. He said sometime In February 2024, Moure Consult Ltd approached some of his victims company with a proposal to assist in securing a loan facility for the development of infrastructure, emphasizing their company's reputation and ability to facilitate such financing through their partners, specifically targeting reputable real estate developers like them. "We have also come to understand that other real estate developers have been similarly misled and defrauded by Moure Consult Ltd. "What we are made to understand is that sometime on February 22, 2024, some of the Estate Developer's fulfill their condition, with the understanding that the loan funds would be disbursed within 45 working days as stipulated in the agreement. However, Moure Consult Ltd has failed to uphold its obligations. "Despite several follow-ups through letters and calls, the funds have not been disbursed. " Upon reaching this deadline, an additional extension was requested until June 28, 2024. Even after this extension, no funds were provided, and efforts to communicate with MD were met with evasion. In your rare responses, you have proposed alternative arrangements, including offering certain amount of money instead of the agreed load citing plans to discount a Bank Guarantee (BG) that has yet to materialize. "Further, he sought to distract them with unrelated proposals, including alleged agricultural investments and contracts with state governors, as well as requests for assistance in supplying tractors and POP materials. President Bola Tinubu and the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa, have been commended for their robust approach to tackling Nigeria’s security challenges. This is contained in a statement by Kennedy Tonjo West, President, Movement for the Survival of the Izon Ethnic Nationality in the Niger Delta, and Isaac Owoicho, National President, Coalition of Youth Leaders for One Nigeria (COYLON). The statement reads: “The Nigerian military under the able leadership of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa, OFR, has given the present istration a cause to relax knowing fully well that the fight the military is involved in from all fronts is on course. “Looking at the coordination of good istration, kinetic and non-kinetic operations, officers and men's welfare, improved military architecture, redefining the entire response to security issues and the zero tolerance for insecurity in every nook and cranny of the country cannot be faulted. “Little wonder diverse groups, including Nigerian youths, have commended President Tinubu for recording improved security across Nigeria way ahead of previous istrations. “There is no doubt that the effective coordination by the CDS towards the final elimination of insurgency, banditry, militancy, oil theft in the Niger Delta region and the IPOB and Boko Haram activities gives credence to a military that is under able leadership. The civilian-military relationship has also improved greatly under this dispensation, leaving pundits flat on their feet, not seeing any reason to castigate the Tinubu regime. “There is no doubt that in appraising the transformation the armed forces of Nigeria has ed through in the last year plus under the leadership of General Musa, one could easily conclude that though the country was bedeviled by serious security challenges before the advent of the Tinubu istration, the vigor and renewed strategies adopted by the CDS and his team have indeed brought some succor to a majority of Nigerians and non-Nigerians alike. “General Musa assumed the office of Chief of Defence Staff on June 23, 2023, and ever since, he has not only shown capacity as a leader with clear-cut intentions who knows the security challenges confronting the nation but has also taken time to provide deliberate leadership and coordinated strategies to make the Nigerian Army, Navy and Air Force formidable from every angle. “Looking at the high level of discipline, cohesive tactics and improved relationships that these forces are known for now, it is clear that they all believe in the transformational leader bestowed on the men and officers since June 2023.” It continued: “The level of cooperation and collaboration with other security apparatus like the Nigerian Police Force (NPF), the Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS), Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) has clearly shown the ability of the defense chief to ensure good synergy among all these organs earing the imagination of many cynics. “When you look at the efforts brought in by the CDS to enhance the nation's borders in collaboration with the NIS and the NCS to prevent the infiltration of criminal elements and the smuggling of illicit goods, including arms and ammunition, it is clear that this is a man that knows his onions.”

Global Gas and Refining Limited has expressed disapproval over the recent ministerial approval of Shell Petroleum Development Company’s (SPDC) divestment of its onshore assets to Renaissance Africa Energy Company Limited. The firm accused Shell of defying a court injunction and undermining Nigeria’s legal processes, labeling the move as a direct affront to the rule of law and national sovereignty. Kenneth Yellowe, Chairman of Global Gas, described the approval as “extremely unwelcome,” stating that Shell’s actions blatantly disregard an existing court order restraining the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) from approving the transaction. He emphasized that Global Gas is in ongoing negotiations with Shell to resolve disputes over substantial financial losses incurred due to alleged breaches of contract by the multinational company. Yellowe highlighted what he called Shell’s “Stalingrad strategy,” a tactic aimed at delaying legal proceedings to exhaust smaller litigants. He accused the company of habitual non-compliance with Nigerian court orders, a practice he claims Shell would not dare exhibit in its home country or other developed nations. “This is a clear demonstration of Shell’s contempt for legal processes, good governance, and the rights of Nigerian businesses and communities, particularly in the Niger Delta,” Yellowe said. Global Gas detailed its troubled partnership with Shell, which began in 1998. The company invested over $500 million in a natural gas processing facility to handle supplies from Shell’s Cawthorne Channel Oil and Gas fields (OML 18). While operations started in 2005, Shell allegedly prioritized international markets over domestic obligations, resulting in dwindling gas supplies that forced Global Gas to shut down its operations. The company also accused Shell of refusing to declare the “Main Gas Start Date,” a contractual milestone that would have activated Shell’s responsibilities. Internal documents purportedly show a deliberate strategy by Shell to frustrate the agreement, causing significant financial losses to Global Gas and its foreign investment partners. Global Gas further accused NUPRC of violating a court order by granting approval for the divestment despite an injunction. The court had directed Shell and Global Gas to explore amicable settlement options, which Global Gas claims it has complied with. Yellowe warned that the approval sets a dangerous precedent for corporate governance in Nigeria, eroding trust in the judiciary and undermining investor confidence. Global Gas called on the Nigerian government, regulatory bodies, and international stakeholders to hold Shell able. “This fight is not just about Global Gas; it is about justice, fairness, and the rule of law for all Nigerian businesses and communities, especially those in the Niger Delta,” Yellowe said. The company pledged to pursue all legal avenues to protect its rights and investments. The controversy underscores long-standing issues in the Niger Delta, where SPDC has faced criticism for environmental degradation and economic marginalization. Global Gas argued that Shell’s actions perpetuate these injustices, leaving communities vulnerable and further eroding trust in corporate governance.

The Islamic Movement in Nigeria otherwise known as Shiites, on Saturday, reiterated calls for the prosecution of the executors of the December 12, 2015 massacre in Zaria, Kaduna state. This is as the group held the 9th anniversary of the massacre in Abuja. In his address, Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky, leader of the group, offered condolences to all those who lost loved ones during the December 2015 massacre and the subsequent killings. He detailed how previous governments unsuccessfully attempted similar massacres, driven by ulterior motives to dismantle the movement and target him personally. He also highlighted various instances of blatant disregard for the law by different arms of the Nigerian state in their suppression of the movement's brothers and sisters. “I commend the steadfastness of our brothers and sisters of the movement despite enduring various levels of intimidation and oppression from the Nigerian government, its security forces, and, at times, the courts,” he said. He cited the absurd claim of 'banning' what the authorities refer to as 'IMN,' a term the Sheikh clarified as a strange label imposed by the government on the Islamic movement. He reminded them that a religious movement cannot be legally or rationally banned. "We have taken the government to Court and they have also taken us to court. In both cases, we won, but they refused to obey the court order. "Now we have a change in government. It is good for the present government to respect the law, so that it would not be seen as a lawless government," Sheikh Zakzaky added.

Yoruba Council Worldwide (YCW) has raised concerns over Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke's alleged decision to relocate the MKO Abiola International Airport from its original site in Ido-Osun to his hometown of Ede. In an open letter to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the council described this move as "undemocratic, unethical, and an affront to justice and equity," calling on the President and stakeholders to intervene immediately. The letter signed by President of the council, Aare Oladotun Hassan and Secretary, Bashorun Isaac Ajibola, highlighted the growing tension between the Ido-Osun and Ede communities, which share boundaries in Osun State. It accuses the governor of using executive power recklessly to rename the airport to "Isiaka Adeleke International Airport, Ede," a decision the council views as a violation of democratic principles and a potential trigger for communal unrest. The Yoruba Council urged prominent Yoruba leaders, royal fathers, civil society organizations, and other Nigerian stakeholders to the Ido-Osun community in what it termed their "just and equitable" fight against marginalization. It warned that the governor’s actions could erode peace and unity in the state, citing evidence of provocation and suppression by Ede-based interests. According to the letter, the MKO Abiola International Airport in Ido-Osun has historical significance, dating back to its establishment as a meteorological station in 1936. Successive governments have invested over N5 billion in its development, with the project nearing completion. The council stressed that relocating the airport to Ede would waste public funds and undermine years of efforts by previous istrations. The council described the governor's alleged plan as nepotistic, accusing him of prioritizing his hometown's interests over the collective good of Osun State. It also criticized his advisors for enabling decisions that could be seen as fiscally irresponsible and detrimental to the state's economic development. The Ido-Osun community’s grievances extend beyond the airport relocation. The letter mentioned past incidents, such as attempts to annex parts of Ido-Osun to Ede and the forced eviction of local farmers. Despite these provocations, the Ido-Osun people have reportedly maintained peace, even under pressure. With specific demands, the council urged the federal government to stop the proposed relocation and calling on the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, and other stakeholders to boycott any foundation-laying ceremony for a new airport in Ede. It argued that the relocation would be not only unjust but also a betrayal of the trust placed in the governor by the people of Osun State. The letter emphasized that the governor's actions contradict the Omoluabi ethos—a Yoruba philosophy of good character, ethics, and integrity. The council warned that such governance risks undermining the democratic principles that uphold fairness, justice, and inclusivity in public istration. The Yoruba Council therefore appealed to President Tinubu to intervene, urging him to ensure that Osun State’s federal allocation benefits all communities equally. The council warned that allowing the airport relocation to proceed could set a dangerous precedent and escalate tensions in the region.

The statement was signed by Comrade Muhammad Bello Alhasan, Secretary of the Coalition, and noted the importance of RMAFC’s leadership in the ongoing debate between federal and state governments over VAT allocation. The CSOs urged stakeholders, including the federal, state, and local governments, to work collaboratively to adopt a consensus-driven VAT allocation formula that promotes fairness and avoids legislative or executive overreach. They emphasized that RMAFC remains the constitutionally mandated arbiter for developing and implementing revenue-sharing formulas in the country. The coalition further highlighted the current VAT distribution structure, where revenues are pooled and shared as 50% to states, 35% to local governments, and 15% to the federal government. They advised that any new formula should reflect VAT’s unique nature as a consumption tax while ensuring equity among all tiers of government. The statement reads, "Under Nigeria’s VAT system, collected VAT is pooled nationally and distributed based on a formula: 50% to States, 35% to Local Governments, and 15% to the Federal Government. "Lagos, as the point of collection, could argue for derivation rights. Kano, as the consumer's residence and point of use, could also claim derivation rights because it is a consumption tax which is borne by the final consumer. "VAT allocation and derivation shall be based on a formula developed by the RMAFC, which considers VAT’s unique nature as a consumption tax and ensures equitable distribution. "The Commission’s position, aligned with the government’s constitutional mandate, ensures that VAT allocation adheres to the principles of fairness, justice, and equity, avoiding any arbitrary apportionment. "The Commission remains the sole arbiter in producing allocation formulae that are fair, just, and equitable for the three tiers of Government. "By maintaining transparency and collaboration, the government’s approach fosters trust and unity among all tiers of government, avoiding divisions that could arise from arbitrary revenue distribution." |

Education experts have called for establishing Schools of Invention and Innovation across Nigeria to nurture young inventors and address the country’s economic challenges. This was the central message at the annual lecture and induction ceremony organized by the King’s College British and American Institutions in Abuja. Themed “The Hidden and Latent Key to Nigeria’s Emergence as a G20 Nation Under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” the event highlighted the urgent need to integrate innovation-driven programs into the education system to promote sustainable growth. The ceremony also featured the presentation of the Effulgence 2024 Doctors Award. Speaking at the event, Country Director of King’s College British American Institutions, Prof. Paul Godwin Udofia described Nigeria’s economy as being in "an emergency room, under oxygen." He emphasized the importance of raising inventors to transform the nation’s fortunes. “Nigeria must shift its focus from crude oil and prioritize human capital development. Our current GDP of $199 billion is significantly behind India’s $3.8 trillion. This disparity underscores the critical need to develop our citizens’ talents,” Udofia stated. He announced the launch of the Association for the Discovery and Promotion of Nigerian Inventors, Academia, Entrepreneurs, and Investors, a platform aimed at fostering innovation and recognizing individuals making significant contributions to national development. Director of the British American University in California, Fortune Otis Oji echoed Udofia’s sentiments. He urged Nigeria to harness its abundant natural and human resources by creating policies to make the country self-sufficient. “By establishing innovation schools and strategically deploying resources, we can shift from being a consuming nation to a producing one. The time has come for us to invest in our own talents and stop relying on external solutions,” Oji said. The speakers called on government officials, local leaders, and private stakeholders to collaborate in creating an enabling environment for inventors. They emphasized that fostering innovation would not only improve Nigeria’s economic standing but also ensure a brighter future for the younger generation. The event concluded with a resolve to prioritize invention and innovation as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s development strategy, with the vision of positioning the nation among the world’s leading economies. 1 Like |

Petrodigits Nigeria Limited has petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, over allegations of contract fraud against the Managing Director of Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), Mr. Van Der Berg. According to the petition, Mr. Van Der Berg fraudulently awarded a contract to SEDCO FOREX NIGERIA LIMITED, despite Petrodigits Nigeria Limited emerging as the winner of the bid. The petition also stated that Petrodigits Nigeria Limited had submitted a bid for the EA OILFIELD DRILLING CONTRACT in 1998, which was later opened at the Sheraton Hotel in Ikeja, Lagos, in June 2000. The company's bid was successful, but Mr. Van Der Berg allegedly rejected the result and instead awarded the contract to SEDCO FOREX NIGERIA LIMITED. The petition further alleges that Mr. Van Der Berg arranged a private second bid for SEDCO FOREX NIGERIA LIMITED, without the approval of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC). When confronted, Mr. Van Der Berg allegedly confirmed his involvement and told Petrodigits Nigeria Limited to "go to hell." Petrodigits Nigeria Limited appealed the decision to the Executive Director of E & P in NNPC Towers, Abuja, who investigated the allegations and sent a report to the Group Executive Council (GEC) of NNPC. The GEC subsequently upheld Petrodigits Nigeria Limited's appeal and declared the company the winner of the EA Oil Field contract award. Despite this, Mr. Van Der Berg allegedly continued to frustrate Petrodigits Nigeria Limited, refusing to issue a contract award letter and instead mounting pressure on the company to relinquish the contract to SEDCO FOREX NIGERIA LIMITED. The petition alleges that Mr. Van Der Berg's actions constitute conspiracy, criminal breach of trust, cheating, dishonesty, and fraud. The petition also alleges that Mr. Van Der Berg's actions were motivated by personal gain and a desire to favor SEDCO FOREX NIGERIA LIMITED, which is allegedly a shell company. The petition claims that Mr. Van Der Berg's actions have caused significant financial losses to Petrodigits Nigeria Limited and have damaged the company's reputation. Petrodigits Nigeria Limited is calling for an investigation into the matter and is urging the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Interpol, to bring Mr. Van Der Berg, Shell SPDC, and SEDCO FOREX NIGERIA LIMITED to justice. The company is also seeking compensation for the losses it has suffered as a result of Mr. Van Der Berg's actions. The petition has been filed with the police and is currently under investigation. The outcome of the investigation is expected to have significant implications for the oil and gas industry in Nigeria, where corruption and contract fraud are widespread. In a statement, Petrodigits Nigeria Limited's lawyer, Clara Azeez, Esq., said that the company is confident that justice will be served. "We have evidence to prove that Mr. Van Der Berg and Shell SPDC engaged in corrupt practices to deny our client the contract it rightfully won," she said. "We will not rest until justice is served and those responsible are held able."
