You can only tell if your meter has crossed over "in the negative units" from your UIU - display/control box.

Check the UIU for a period (like three consecutive days). If the units do not reduce, then your meter is most probably byed, hence your tenants are free-riding (stealing energy) and that's why the units have not been exhausted since installation.

If however the UIU is not showing negative values and your check shows that the units are reducing, then you have nothing to be worried about.

Good afternoon everyone

I will like u all to please help me on this issue.
4 months ago, I requested for a new prepaid meter for 11 shops, even though 5 of them requested to be disconnected from nepa light while 6 shops was connected to the meter.

My concern now is, since I acquire this meter 4/5 months ago, this meter has not trigger off so they can recharge on it which has started giving me concern lately then I log on ibedc (Ibadan electricity distribution company) to obtain the outstanding bills for this new meter and from the look of things, aside the amount placed on the meter (by phch through their dubious means) from estimated billings prior to the insurance of the meter, I noticed a negative amount reading on the meter which I find very confusing.

I am beginning to think maybe the meter has started borrowing units on it own with what I read somewhere online.

These guys has been using light for over 8months without paying light bills.

I will like to act fact on this issue as this shop occupants abandoned a previous meter they were using earlier citing no amount of unit they purchase on it quickly exhaust which prompted them to go request for an outstanding bills on the meter and it was discovered that about 350k debt was on it incurred by the previous tenants.

I don't want such occurrence on the new meter so I want to act fast.

Please I will like someone knowledgeable about metering stuffs to please take a look and possibly give next line of action..

Your prepaid meter is equipped with overdraft functionality that will continue to supply light when there is no unit on the meter.

The negative units is the amount you are owing.
To clear the negative, u need to recharge an amount that is more that your negative amount and you need to factor the amount that they will deduct to settle part of your initial outstanding debt.
May be you can recharge about 15k first.
Anything less than this, the meter will not accept your token.

Note, any rejected token is still valid for usage once you have cleared the negative amount.

Yes at that time you only use what you recharge once your point finished light with trip off until you recharge and you can recharge any amount you want at time at your own time.

Dear Caseless, please I have same issue with EKEDC. My meter runs into negative and now has an outstanding of 2k plus units. They're now charging us at the prevailing rate of Band A at 290.50 of which the default was prior to the Band upgrade.
I have written to plead for rate review and they asked that I visit the commercial manager who upon visiting insisted that I write. I have now written and being referred back to him.
What do you advise I do?

They were held responsible. Infact, they've been removed from the power supply. They're in serious blackout going months now...

Tbh, those tenants feel unconcerned, infact most of them has clearly stated they're no more in need of the light, so I am left to tackle the issue alone and see how I can go round it. I had to allow the senior nepa official that got the meter for me handle the case. I have been asked to pay 30k to retrieve the wire that was taken away, then from there he will know what to do concerning the meter and If examine and the meter can still be repaired hopefully then I'll know how much debt they will put on it. As it stands, before the meter was disconnected, I had 56k debt on it....

30k for what? Ask them to return the meter , Pay the debt and start using it. ..Similar issue happened to me and ikedc staff wanted to take the meter away. So i can request a new meter , i refused , then cleared the bill and everything is going fine since then.

Why not clear the 50k debt and keep the metter but disconnect the shop.

I recently ordered 3 meters and I can tell you that the outstanding you’re seeing is from the postpaid period before the prepaid was installed. The estimated billings you were giving before installation wasn’t paid in full so it rolled over and you’ll be debited 25% times very recharge (note you can’t offset the bills at their office).

As to why it’s not reading…… are you sure it’s not tampered ??

If it’s not then it could be a technical error but for 4 months… just stylishly make friends with one of the officials, open up to the person and see if they can come fix it without a heavy charge but I doubt.

If I have the meter number I can help you do a deep check.
The postpaid acct no. and the new meter no.

Are you saying the meter is not faulty like I am thinking. They've disconnected the meter, can I reconnect it, clear the debt and continue using it, there won't be issue ...
