There was this thread on Nairaland that made the front page about few days ago about whether a guy should marry a lady just because he got her pregnant.

It got me thinking and took me down memory lane, reminding me of a girl I went to secondary school with.

Khadija was a beautiful, petite teenage girl with big dreams. She rocked a big afro that she always combed out, and her school uniform was always neatly starched and ironed. She had a dark ebony complexion, a permanent smile on her face, and a friendly personality that made everyone like her.

She was the only girl in a family of eight and was pampered by her parents and big brothers. She was in SS1 at Methodist Grammar School in Agege, Lagos. Her family, originally from Kaduna State, had recently converted from Islam to Christianity. She had her life planned out—she wanted to be an engineer and make her family proud.

I was in the same class as her and secretly had a crush on this articulate, beautiful girl.

At the start of SS1, we got a new teacher, Mr. Olanrewaju. He had just graduated from university and was posted to my school after his NYSC. He studied chemical engineering but was assigned to teach physics.

Mr. Olanrewaju was a devout Christian, a worker in Deeper Life Bible Church, and a very serious guy. He always talked about God and the Bible. Since I was also a member of the church, I got close to him, especially after bumping into him at one of our December retreats. He once confided in me that he hated teaching and was only doing it while waiting to land a job as a big-shot engineer in an oil and gas company.

Now back to my story—around this time, Mr. Olanrewaju started getting close to Khadija. He had his office in the Technology Department, a separate building from the teachers' office because he refused to stay with the other teachers.

I noticed he was always studying with Khadija, helping her with assignments, and mentoring her since she also wanted to be an engineer. Plus, she was a new Christian who had just converted from Islam, so he was also guiding her in her faith. Because of this, everyone trusted him.

We all believed he was a good, responsible Christian man, so nobody suspected anything. That’s why we were all SHOCKED when Khadija ended up PREGNANT by him.

It was one of the biggest scandals in our school at the time. Olanrewaju was completely trusted, so no one saw it coming.

Her parents stormed the school in anger, and Khadija, overwhelmed with shame, had to drop out in SS1. Just like that, all her dreams were gone. She was confused and devastated because she had trusted her teacher. Olanrewaju was suspended from the school, and Khadija’s brothers went back to Islam after feeling betrayed by someone they trusted.

Her family was so ashamed that they forced Olanrewaju to marry her. They couldn’t allow their only daughter to have a child out of wedlock—it was an abomination to them.

At that point, Khadija had developed an intense hatred for him. She didn’t want anything to do with him, and even Olanrewaju wasn’t ready for marriage. He was clearly in a position of authority and took advantage of her. Marriage was the LAST thing on their minds.

But their families wouldn’t have it. A wedding was quickly arranged, and Khadija moved in with her husband. Nine months later, she gave birth to a healthy baby boy.

The scandal eventually faded, and we moved on with school. Years later, I ran into Khadija again.

She already had four kids and looked completely miserable. She never finished secondary school and complained about constant beatings and domestic abuse from Olanrewaju. Even he wasn’t happy in the marriage. I shook my head when I realized this once-bright girl with so much potential was now trapped in a life that felt like a prison—all because she got pregnant.

Now, this brings me to the reason for my rant. Let’s analyze the main issues and their implications:

1. Khadija was a minor and a victim.

She got pregnant from her first sexual encounter, and she trusted her teacher and spiritual mentor. So, in reality, she was a victim. Plain and simple. It makes me so mad when people blame girls in situations like this.

2. The real mistake was forcing her into marriage.

Yes, getting pregnant as a teenager was a mistake. But the BIGGER mistake was forcing her to marry her ab. That decision ruined her life.

Why did her parents and family insist on the marriage?

To save face. Most Nigerian parents only care about avoiding SHAME. They don’t think about their daughter’s future or happiness. They just want to avoid embarrassment—what will the neighbors say? What will church think?

They didn’t care whether Khadija loved the man or not. They didn’t care if he was abusive. They just wanted to erase the "shame" of an out-of-wedlock pregnancy.

But listen to me, ladies—pregnancy is NOT the end of your life.

You don’t have to force a man who doesn’t love you into marriage just because you got pregnant. Imagine being stuck with someone for the rest of your life, knowing deep down that you forced him into it. That marriage will NEVER be happy. You’ll be setting yourself up for a life of misery, and you’ll bring innocent children into an unhappy home.

Please, don’t do this to yourself.

What options did Khadija have?

1. They could have safely terminated the pregnancy, allowing her to continue school and chase her dreams. She would have learned an important life lesson and built resilience.

2. They could have let her have the baby while ing her fully. With proper childcare help, she could have gone back to school and continued her education with a new perspective on life.

In conclusion,

It is wicked and cruel to force a girl into marriage just because of an accidental pregnancy.

First, you wrongly presume sex with her teacher was her first encounter.

Secondly, since the sex was will full, then she is not a victim.

It is simply a case of going through the consequences of her action like the driver who mowed down soldiers yesterday. No one called him a victim.

And this is where you are seeing how God punishes fornicators in one the several ways in that they shall be in marriages made from hell.

https://nairaland.sitesunblocked.org/8079777/polygamy-gods-punishment-fornication-deut#129746722

Or if she runs away, extreme suffering and poorverty follows her. Like Hagar, no one will help her.

So, you can see fornication is one of the causes of poorverty because God punishes the fornicators and for women the punishment is times 2 or 3.

And that is why you see women suffer much more than men.

You need to let go of this archaic thinking, it will likely put in trouble outside the shores of nigeria.

A teacher sleeping with a student is an abuse of position/power by that teacher and at the very least a conflict of interest which the teacher, being the older and more knowledgeable party should have prevented.

It is worse that the child was likely a minor. Even if the child had been sleeping with here peers, the adult had done a very terrible thing and should be severely punished for this.

How is he better than the taliban and Mujahideen who take children as brides.

The girl likely suffered more than the man because having no education and skilled (thanks to the man), she became a fulltime house wife with zero economic prospect. Also, she is the one taking care of 4 children at home while the man goes his way everyday.

As op rightly put it, the married messed up the girl's life even if they did so with the best intention.

Child was in grade 10 and minor. It was a case of statutory rape. Plain and simple.

For the sake of argument and learning, I kind of dispute your opinion.

First, you have to appreciate the sociology of the environment. In Africa a secondary school girl is not a minor.

Infact most of our fathers are more than 15 years older than our mothers and they married when he was probably 23. So you see the minor age here is low.

It is trite to note that in Europe and in America they too married like this. Infact they have more eloping couples than we have in Africa. But we can see that this tradition of befriending and marrying girls in teens dropped, hence why their attitude to it, appears to have changed.

So, based on our society, a minor is probably one in primary school hence why there was a huge complaint when Chrisland girl almost broke it with her sextape.

So, under African Natural Law, she is an adult of which I know that she is even the one who went after the teacher (which beautiful girl studies engineering? She is the one who went after the teacher. Men are just labouring under the fact that we do the big direct and physical pursuing which women set up a man to do so that he can be blamed for it all, exactly as you are doing.

Even to the point that he too blames himself.

And do you not see that women are big on blaming you, men? Do you not see that they are most frustrated and angry when they do not have a man to blame?

It is a system. Women set men up and men get blamed and the simple man also blames himself.

Whereas, if men were observant they would see that it is actually the girl/woman who chose him. And she has already chosen him even before he came. (You think it is only rich people they choose. No they choose men based on what they want. And that is why women have too many men in their lives. Eg Teacher, tailor, policeman, soldier, lecturer, clothes seller, shoe seller, weave on seller and market people are all her "friends" And when they purchase a gen/car, mechanic will enter. And so it is not only money and riches they are looking for as simp boys and men think which is why their plans will always work on you as you must always be taken by surprise when they suddenly come for you whereas you were thinking she can never come for you since you are poor.)

So, you do not get to see that she is the one making herself available and convenient for you to pursue.

That is the set up against men which is why we see God punishing the woman more and she suffers more when she fornicates for fornication is for men but for a woman it is Prosstitution.

So looking at how this girl has suffered, it clearly tells you she is the one who caused it all

And this is where you see that statement "God Punish you" is at work, for God in deed sees and punishes.

We don't have grade 10 in Nigeria and it is known and even expected that girls in secondary school are not virgins, so you have no case here.

What a vile, disturbing comment, you've penned here, Dtruthspeaker. An absolute displeasure. Let's see what nonsense is being proclaimed in this cringe-worthy attempt to justify rape and misogyny.

Dtruthspeaker:
First, you wrongly presume sex with her teacher was her first encounter.

Pointless deflection (or perhaps wilful misdirection), completely missing the point of OP's story. The main focus here is abuse of power by someone in a position of authority.

Secondly, since the sex was will full, then she is not a victim.

Only you are the judge, jury and even executioner too, abi? FYI, "Willful sex" doesn't automatically erase the fact that she was in fact, a minor, at least legally, and that the shameless perv was in a position of authority, and that he abused said position.

It is simply a case of going through the consequences of her action like the driver who mowed down soldiers yesterday. No one called him a victim.

This staggeringly tone-deaf, morally reprehensible position you've wilfully adopted, without any modicum of shame or empathy, on this topic is yet another stark reminder of the systemic failures in a society that enables perpetrators and insensitive victim-shamers such as your clueless self. The spurious comparison you tried to make with Khadija and the driver is so laughably disconnected, it begs to reason how any rational person can believe that the two events are similar in any way, form or fashion.

I must say, it's quite appalling that you would readily reduce the young lass Khadija's experience to a simplistic "consequences of her action" narrative, foolishly trying to imply, dishonestly and shamelessly, and with your woefully misguided machismo, that she was somehow complicit in her own exploitation.

And this is where you are seeing how God punishes fornicators in one the several ways in that they shall be in marriages made from hell.

Smh, lmao at this dude with his anachronistic mentality and his medieval moralizing. The times have truly left you behind. Don't worry, very soon, you will be advocating for public stonings, and even a good old-fashioned scarlet letter, for good measure grin.

https://nairaland.sitesunblocked.org/8079777/polygamy-gods-punishment-fornication-deut#129746722

He links readers to a spurious excerpt, cited from a flawed 3,000-year-old text to justify forced marriage, as well as his pathetic victim-blaming. Seeing as you're clearly stuck in the past, it should come as no surprise, that you would cling on to ancient misogyny, with such tenacity and lack of self awareness, smh.

Or if she runs away, extreme suffering and poorverty follows her. Like Hagar, no one will help her.

More shockingly misogynistic stupidity.

So, you can see fornication is one of the causes of poorverty because God punishes the fornicators and for women the punishment is times 2 or 3.

Here, he shows zero human empathy, uses religious dogma as a weapon, to justify the harsh, insensitive blaming and shaming of victims of abuse and circumstance.

And that is why you see women suffer much more than men.

^^^D-sanctimonious-Truthspeaker, at his finest, ladies and gentlemen, reveling in his self-appointed role as THE moral arbiter.

Smh, you should be ashamed of yourself, defending rape and misogyny with such fanatical gusto. Your response reeks to the high heavens, of toxic misogyny, victim-blaming, faux piety and sanctimonious pontificating, and a disturbingly warped sense, or view of morality -- no surprises there though, given that you take your moral codes from the same religious text that justifies slavery, genocide, infanticide etc etc.

============================

Now let us analyze, the psychological underpinnings of Dtruthspeaker's response.

1> His irrational eagerness to assume, and Olympic triple-jump into conclusions, the absolute worst about Khadija's character and experiences, betrays his deep-seated need to control others and judge them, because of fear of autonomy and agency of others, particularly women. You hate that women have their own wishes and can fulfill them by virtue of their own free will, don't you?

2> He's too thick and stuck in the past to see the forest for the trees, so he will deliberately miss the point, shifting focus away from the perpetrator's actions and onto the victim's perceived culpability in a perverse attempt to justify his concept of "authority".

3> He wilfully uses his religion, in a chilling and disturbing attempt, to rationalize manipulation and cruelty as divine punishments and justifications for Khadija's suffering.

I must confess though, that the most revealing, albeit disturbing, aspect of this individual's response is his covert sadism. He evidently takes great satisfaction in imagining Khadija's suffering, gleefully citing biblical punishments to enhance his ecstasy, and betraying his bizarre, deep-seated pleasure in the misfortune of others by callously dismissing her agency without a second thought.

Your comments on this thread, have exposed your psychological profile as a bully who deceives himself by cloaking his cruelty in the language of morality and scripture, blissfully and perhaps, wilfully unaware, as to the depth of his own psychological rot.

Pointless deflection (or perhaps wilful misdirection), completely missing the point of OP's story. The main focus here is abuse of power by someone in a position of authority.

We live in a world where power and advantage is abused perpetually eg police keeping you at checkpoints or banks refusing to give you your money even if a part of it because of a PND (post no debit) or is it parents and guardians and older ones, tsk the very headquarters of abuse of power. Or is it bosses and employers who have tied job security and promotions to their personal satisfaction.

We are all living under abuse of power everyday with people using their advantage to their benefit.

So the position of crime has moved to the actual commission of whatever is the crime eg being shot by policemen at checkpoints or your boss bashing your head with a tractor's spanner or a teacher factually raping a mature woman who is his student.

TheDevilsBride:

We are all judges and juries whenever a case is presented for our assessment.

And I have already posited and proved that she is not a minor being that she is even in senior secondary school where it is known that girls there are no longer virgins even before reaching there possessing a very powerful will to have sex.

And a will showing her intentions to have sex with older ones eg Year 2 University students, Corpers, friend's Daddy's. The older the better. You no see Regina Daniels?

Threads like these prove this excuse is not viable at all

It is unfortunate how you men do not see that you are willing scapegoats playing the part scripted by women in this scheme engineered by women!

Girls especially secondary school girls are not as innocent as they portray themselves. They always have a plan and that plan always involves getting a man to do for them what they do not want to do for themselves.

They already have a target in mind and when that targeted man shows up they begin to put in motion that plan.

What you do not know you are seeing is one whose plan blew up in her face and is suffering the consequences of her plan that failed.

She would not have complained if her teacher man got the big dream job he had in mind and if he went on to love her so much and give her everything she wants in life so she can be better than her mates who are still in school unmarried with nothing to their names.

Women beginning with when they are girls in secondary school are very calculative and already planning the man they shall hook to give them everything in life.

Or is it bosses and employers who have tied job security and promotions to their personal satisfaction.

^^^Keen readers will note here that Dtruthspeaker tacitly shrugs off statutory rape and child grooming by religious mentors, strictly on the ridiculous basis that other forms of abuse exist. I deem it unnecessary to expose the moral bankruptcy of this affirmation, because the logic speaks for itself, smh. Moving on...

We are all living under abuse of power everyday with people using their advantage to their benefit.

Same spurious argument as above.

So the position of crime has moved to the actual commission of whatever is the crime eg being shot by policemen at checkpoints or your boss bashing your head with a tractor's spanner or a teacher factually raping a mature woman who is his student.

Pointless obfuscation. Two wrongs don't make a right, although, in this case, they do make a rapist and an enabler.

We are all judges and juries whenever a case is presented for our assessment.

Very well then, I hereby sentence your argument to a lifetime of irrelevance, especially as it only serves to misdirect, and steer the convo away from the abuse of power by authority figures, lol.

And I have already posited and proved that she is not a minor being that she is even in senior secondary school where it is known that girls there are no longer virgins even before reaching there possessing a very powerful will to have sex.

^^^That awkward moment when a shameless rape and misogyny apologist, thinks that sexual maturity is defined by class levels in schools, and not actual federal and/or state laws.

And a will showing her intentions to have sex with older ones eg Year 2 University students, Corpers, friend's Daddy's. The older the better. You no see Regina Daniels?

You harboring any perverse fantasies, that should be of special interest to the FBI, huh? Because, my word, the ridiculous extrapolations you've scribbled, about teenage girls' sexual proclivities are pretty much about as scientific as astrology and twice as creepy, with this paragraph in particular, looking like something culled straight from the pages, of a predator's diary shocked!

Clearly, your comment here is to do exactly what I said which is to distract and ensure that men are always blamed for all the crimes that you devils commit exactly like this devil.

From your trite submissions thus far, a casual reader shouldn't be blamed, if safely concluding that you're operating under the quaint delusion that by virtue of being male, you should be exempt from moral responsibility. I daresay, inasmuch as you're clearly in the dark about what your subconscious has exposed about you, that your desperate need to defend the indefensible really speaks volumes about your own character, none of it being particularly flattering.

See the smear campaign!

Rather than foolishly contorting logic to blame an innocent, exploited child, allow me to suggest re-calibrating and re-directing your indignation toward the actual perpetrator, abeg. Your endeavor so far, to rebrand statutory rape as a mutually beneficial arrangement, has been nothing short of a travesty.

In all that rubble, nothing valid was said. It's just a dissertation full of complaints and empty retorts, noises and ad hominem. All invalid arguments.

I already said it at the beginning in my reply to Atk1nson, to the effect that statutory rape does apply to secondary school girls. And the way girls today have burnt it, it can never cover them.

But, I know you did not come because of this, you just came to divert the attention of men from ing to see that it was the girl who set them up and she sets up the man to get blamed. And the simp man even blames himself.

This is what you are trying to cover up and why you are making all these noise trying to cause distractions

I honestly don't argue with these people in matters like these. A minor was taken advange off by her teacher, the teacher should rightfully be in jail in saner climes and the dude is defending the rapist.
So many potential rapist walking lose in Nigeria.

I quite understand your stance. As for myself, I usually refrain from indulging them as well. Although once in a while, I enjoy using simple logic to twist them in and out, till I've sufficiently had my fill and made them look stupid, lol.

Did people not see it? You think if it was prosecutable they wouldn't have called the police?

Even you did not call the police when it happened. So you are talking rubbish.

You are comparing here to Madder climes where a person's daughter is suddenly carried away by a stranger, for months and years being raped and kept hostage.

A place where the most evil rapes are committed daily eg like the man who raped a 70yr old.

A land where students kill fellow classmates and teachers and parents and you can not go to school in peace. You call that sane?

It should be noted Nigerian law does not explicitly define or provide for “statutory rape.”

And I even dare say that that concept of "statutory rape" is actually here in Nigeria and already in force as is shown where a father impregnates his teenage daughter.

Even if she consented, her consent is shit because, it is not valid and cannot be valid.

But the standard for statutory rape here is in Primary school for now hence the cry which the Chrisland children generated when they breached that protection by showing the world that they do not want that protection.

But for now, it completely holds and applies only to primary school girls but for girls above, the case will decide.

Ah, I can perceive the stench of butthurt, wafting aimlessly, from your direction, as a noxious cloud of your desperation to tell sad lies, born from the fact that you tried, and failed to muster any poignant or even coherent counterarguments to salvage your tattered claims. Safe to say, lol, that your intellectual well has run dry.

Why not hop on back on your main moniker and actually prove that my arguments are false, hmmm? Or you would prefer to keep clucking and flapping about like this? I know that's more your speed. Don't get me wrong, I'd be happy to keep watching you meltdown for no apparent reason, if only to underscore the fact that, when it comes to the arena of logical discourse, you're little more than a featherweight, swinging wildly at shadows while I continue to dance circles around you grin.

I do not see any defence of rape here but rather a look into the girl and the fact that girls do pursue men and make them fall but nobody cares but to wholly blame the man and therefore even men themselves help girls in covering them up.

I see what you mean. Either ways, adults are in a better position to retrain themselves compared to minors even when pursued.

I have seen an 18yr old sent to jail and his life destroyed for sleeping with a 17 or old gf.

Even though the age gap is silm, 18 was considered an adult while 17 a minor.

In situations like pregnancies of a minor, who pursues who becomes irrelevant.

The matter will be whether he had sex with a minor or not. That the minor pursued you is not a valid defence in any court of law.

Yes we all know that adults are in a better position but nonetheless it wouldn't be wise to bat away the fact that girls when they mean you, can make even the strongest and disciplined guy to fall.

This knowledge can save men's lives for they are better prepared to resist the girl.
