The House of Representatives has ed for second reading a bill proposing the conduct of presidential, gubernatorial, National and state Houses of Assembly and local government polls on the same day.

The proposed legislation was among 39 Constitution alteration bills ed by second reading and referred to the Committee on Constitution Review at yesterday’s plenary.

The bill sponsored by the chairman of the House Committee on Rules and Business, Francis Waive, Ikeagwuonu Ugochinyere and 34 others is proposing a simultaneous conduct of all elections on a date to be determined by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The Electoral Act 2022 provides for the conduct of the presidential and National Assembly election on the same day and the conduct of gubernatorial and state assemblies, as well as local government elections, on a separate date to be fixed by the electoral body.

I beg to disagree. All election on the same day is preferable as it will eliminate the bandwagon effect of everyone voting for the Government at the Centre in subsequent elections as we had before. It means opposition parties can be chairman of local government areas in Nigeria.

Imagine if the last elections were conducted the same day, even Sanwo Olu may not be the Governor today.

It will drastically reduce the bandwagon effect that comes with a party winning the presidency.

With the current structure, once the president is declared, the governorship election is always formalities most of the time; with the party of the president-elect having obvious upper hand.

Just imagine Presidential, Vice Presidential, Governorship, etc, elections were organized at once in 2023, LP would have won about 11 governorship seats and over 30 senatorial seats.

But I can swear to you that Tinubu and his hordes of fools will not allow this see the light of the day.

Taking good steps 🐾 in the right direction, but in all this, they should a bill that will make vote counting to be in real time, as you cast it's been tally up and counting on a very large screen. So as soon as the voting is concluded the winner is know immediately. Until we get this right we are still joking....
