The Executive Chairman of Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Rasaq Olusola Ajala, has said the Council’s decision to sell Sallah Rams at heavily subsidised rates is rooted in a desire to Muslim residents in fulfilling their religious obligations during Eid el-Kabir, while also demonstrating the tangible benefits of democratic governance.

Ajala made this known during the 8th edition of the Council’s annual subsidised Sallah Ram distribution, which was held at the Council Secretariat on Town Planning Way, Ilupeju, Lagos.

Over 1,000 healthy Rams were offered at a discounted price of ₦75,000 each, despite similar livestock selling for over ₦200,000 in open markets. The initiative, according to Ajala, is designed to ease the financial burden on Muslim families during the festive period.

“This subsidised Ram sale is about meeting the needs of our Muslim brothers and sisters in accordance with the dictates of the Holy Qur’an,” Ajala said. “In the same spirit, we also provide chickens at subsidised rates to our Christian brethren during Christmas. Democracy is about people and their welfare, and that is what this scheme represents.”

He emphasised that participation in the programme does not require political connections. “All that is required is a voter’s card to confirm residency within the LCDA and a radio or television licence to demonstrate civic responsibility,” he said.

Despite a large crowd assembling from as early as 6 am, the process was orderly and well-coordinated. Prospective buyers were itted in batches of 15 to 20 people into the Council premises, where they underwent an initial identity screening. Once cleared, they received numbered cards and were directed to a second queue where payments were made. With their receipts and screening cards, buyers proceeded to the Ram Collection Point to receive their livestock.

Many residents commended the efficiency of the arrangement, describing the experience as smooth and well-managed. Tajudeen Ajagbe, a resident of Ilupeju and one of the beneficiaries, praised the Council Chairman’s leadership and foresight.

“Honourable Ajala has demonstrated outstanding leadership,” Ajagbe said. “This subsidised Sallah Ram scheme, which began eight years ago, is a clear reflection of his commitment to the welfare of the people, especially the less privileged. What we are witnessing here is a testimony to his people-centred approach.”

LGA funds for Ileya Ime subsidy. Smh.

Is Holy Qur’an teachings not against buying ram if you can't afford it? So why subsidise eid ram with LGA funds?

It is understandable if he's using his personal funds but using LGA funds to give N125K subsidy on eid rams for 1,000 rams costing N125 million tax payers seems somehow. N125m is a lot of money o! He wasn't elected to subsidize eid ram and Christmas chickens. Odi Olowo has public primary schools in need of functional libraries with educational books, sick bays, furniture etc. The funds, if recovered, should go to these public primary schools.

I think the EFCC should help recover the funds used for this ram subsidy and government should look at this kind of expenditure during our religious festivals now that Supreme Court has ordered the direct release of funds to LGAs.

We didn't remove petrol and electricity subsidies and introduce students loan for indigent students in order to free funds to LGAs for use in subsidizing eid rams and Christmas chickens consumption and marriage dowry like we have in the North.

There must be strict fiscal guidelines in the expenditure of LGA funds. Supreme Court should please help us again to ensure its ruling clearly forbids this kind of expenditures. I know the Governors had been doing this and we complained against it , we need to complain against LGAs too.

Religion is a rewarding personal devotion to your faith and calls for personal sacrifices like buying your own eid rams, giving offerings etc from what Allah had blessed you with. It's not a tax on others who don't practice your faith to fund or bear for you.

If I was married I would have gone there to buy even though I'm not a Muslim. At least for the next month, there would be enough meat in the house.

Is it not the people that got the money? Why do we drink Panadol when there's no headache at all?

But they did not get the rams for free. They paid 75K each, which was affordable to them.

Blame should not go to the citizens, as they perhaps find not know the source of the funds, whether it came from the purse of the chairman, or the council’s purse.
