This is not life, still working as a cleaner at 71yrs. In 1971 when she entered the country she was likely in her teens around 17, how is someone like that still a cleaner after so many years abroad?

And secondly I'm very sure her dismissal was more likely because of her age, she may not be cleaning as well as she used to and maybe there have been complaints about the quality of her work and they didn't know how to let her go until this incident happened

Aye o ni da. Na dem.oush am go there? Around that 1971 that she moved, I'm sure opportunities are in Nigeria and not as competitive as today. A lot of her mates have retired and enjoying their lives after civil service. A lot of our parents seized the opportunity of that time and had made fortunes working in civil service with minimal education
"Enjoy their lives after civil service". di
Did you even hear yourself?

Is it Nigeria that made her remain a cleaner for 54 years in the UK? You people so hate your country that you don't even mind embarrassing yourselves online anymore with your subpar way of thinking.

The thing with the UK is that most of our youth get there and get side-tracked. Many of them don't exceed high-school either because they're there illegally or deliberately just refuse to further. It's not easy getting professional jobs cos it's only if there's no white person who can do the job that they consider other citizens.

The ease of making money through blue collar jobs also doesn't help matters especially considering her age.

It's not surprising that she's still a cleaner after so many years...she probably started off as an illegal...This is why I tell people- don't go to UK or anywhere to hide...you'll regret it las las.

It is well...I hope she's re-instated...if she's able to make a good case...especially now that students and supervisors are rallying for her.

It's just recently that many youths began going for masters and professional studies.

I don't understand why a 70-year-old woman, who has been in the UK since she was a teenager, still works as a cleaner. She experienced the good 'ol days of the UK before things became as bleeped up as it is and should have made enough to already retire. Something's wrong

Overseas, there's dignity in Labour. No age limit, no shaming, nothing. As long as you're still active, you are employable. A cleaner in the UK is a multimillionaire in Nigeria. Since she's moved to the UK, she must have had meaningful assets including buildings in Nigeria from that cleaning job if she hasn't eaten with both hands. She may also be closer home at 71 than you think. If she retires home at that age, she could age faster. Even with her cleaner job in a place like LSE,she'd get health Insurance and other benefits. Who can offer cleaners that in Nigeria, tell me.
There's no dignity in being a cleaner after 54yrs in the UK bro, don't see blue and call it black. Did you read the part she was already complaining about her rent and her bills? Would you want that kind of "dignity" for your loved ones?

Exactly the point.
It's possible she didn't steal and old age is upon her.

But there's everything wrong with spending decades in the UK and still doing cleaning jobs at 70+.

This is one of the people that are ever comfortable with appellations like " Mummy London" or " Mama ilu oyinbo". There are many of them over there who got carried away with the feeling of being abroad and never planned or thought of a day they will ever come back home.

Just a few weeks ago, we read of a 70 some year old man doing Uber in US who was killed. Why? It is because, they have a mind set the moment they step on the ground over there.

No plan to ever come back home.
No plan for themselves knowing fully well that the UK environment is harsh to eveeyone whether you are active or retired. Infact , the UK society aims to make you useless to yourself at the end of the day.

Lesson for other people presently forming Mummy London.

I am 101 percent sure all her children were born there and are still there. But of course for UK, mama no see pikin, pikin no see mama.

Because the UK system is to make you useless to yourself if and when. you fail to plan your life.

Being in UK since 1971 for God sake.

Most probably, education zero!

So true. The children themselves are probably juggling 2 or 3 jobs to pay bills while mama is also struggling to pay her own bills. It's such a sad situation.

You're getting me wrong. There's no job seen as a dirty job over there.. you can also work at any age, provided you still have the energy. That's my point. As a cleaner, she'll enjoy many benefits that only the rich enjoy here in Nigeria, including health insurance. If she's complaining about rent, it's a different thing

Even if na to come back Nigeria and set up.

She is a grandmother who probably loves her own independence.

I know many Nigerian pensioners in the UK, who live on their own for any number of reasons.

In 2021, 3.3 million people aged 65 years and over were living alone in England and Wales, 30.1 % of the older population. The proportion of older women living alone was lower in 2021 (36.3%) than in 2011 (39.2%). For men, the proportion increased slightly in 2021 (22.7%) compared with 2011 (21.8%).

That is not true. We have health insurance here as well for cleaners: both private HMOs and the government NHIS (National Health Insurance Scheme). In lagos there's the LASHMA (Lagos state health management agency )
In a standard people orientated society, you shouldn't be allowed to work at certain ages when the society should be the one taking care of you. Let's not praise what's killing us.

I pity you and your kind who are celebrating your comment, your hate for Nigeria has deprived you of something important. She moved to the UK in 1971, Nigeria economy was ok, there were jobs yet her inferiority complex sent her to UK and you turn around to blame Nigeria. If the UK you guys praise so much is as good as you claim, why hasn't UK changed her life ? I was expecting you to wonder what is all the hype about UK if a woman who moved to UK over 50years ago can still be working as a cleaner but no, your brain is set to blame Nigeria for everything. It's not possible for you to see an educated non Nigeria who moved to Nigeria in the 70s that is poor to the point of being a cleaner in Nigeria but the reverse is the case for some Nigerian who travelled out within the same period

What if she has been working in low-waged jobs since she first arrived? (which is fairly common)
What if her stay in the UK was not unbroken due to a period spent in Nigeria? (which is probably true)
What if her state pension is less than the statutory maximum? (which is fairly common in immigrant communities)

- Relative pensioner poverty rates in the UK stand at nearly 18%; this is almost the same as pre-pandemic, when they were at their highest since 2006/07. However, the highest poverty rates among people aged 16 and over are among working-age adults aged 60 and over, 25% of whom are in poverty.

- Of all UK pensioners in poverty, more than half (55%) are in deep poverty and almost three in ten (29%) are in very deep poverty.

- Some groups, including people from some minority ethnic backgrounds, are at particular risk of pensioner poverty: people of Bangladeshi and Pakistani backgrounds have the highest rates, with more than two in five Pakistani people aged 50 and over in the UK living in poverty.

- For people from minority ethnic backgrounds, the ethnicity pay gap plays a role in levels of pensioner poverty.
- Auto-enrolment has transformed the pension landscape but working histories that include part-time work and low pay mean many
people do not meet the threshold (a salary of £10,000 per year) for auto-enrolment into workplace pension schemes.

The UK is not the Eldorado a lot of us think it is. Just ask any elderly person based there, who is having to make do with the state pension.

Old age can make you forget things. Same way pregnancy can make a young lady forget things. Go and find it out.
