As Catholics worldwide welcome Pope Leo XIV, a lesser-known detail about the new pontiff has emerged: his visit to Nigeria nearly a decade ago.

Then known as Bishop Robert Prevost, the American-born clergyman travelled to Abuja in 2016 as part of his work with the Order of St. Augustine.

The visit marked a historic milestone for the religious order.

“For the first time, General Chapter of the Order of St. Augustine on the African continent — Abuja, Nigeria,” read a translated caption from a 2016 photo posted on Pope Leo’s X (formerly Twitter) .

The image shows him alongside Catholic leaders, both foreign and Nigerian, dressed in traditional clerical attire.

At the time of his visit, Leo XIV was serving as Bishop of Chiclayo, Peru.

Before that, he led the Augustinian Province in Chicago and served two as Prior General of the global order, known for its emphasis on community life, spiritual reflection, and service.

His connection to Nigeria stands out, especially considering the country’s deep Catholic roots and the long gap since a papal visit.

The last pope to visit Nigeria was John Paul II in 1998.

President Bola Tinubu congratulated Pope Leo XIV on his election, saying the pontiff’s “message of faith and hope resonates across the globe.”

He also expressed joy on behalf of Nigerian Catholics, who now find a deeper link to the Vatican through the pope’s past presence in Abuja.

Pope Leo succeeds Pope Francis, who visited several African nations but never Nigeria during his papacy

Stop being silly. I'm definitely more Yoruba than you. As a Yoruba man it's not necessary to prostrate before a Fulani man or ibo man who doesn't have that in his culture. Do you think Akinwumi would prostrate to greet his hausa maiguard even if the maiguard is older? No! This is just eye service

NIGERIA UPDATE: Onwards to the future

As a founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), I have fond memories of working with other compatriots to negotiate the merger of political parties that created the APC. It had been my hope since 2013 that my personal values and that of the APC will continue to align up to the time I choose to retire from politics.

Developments in the last two years confirm that there is no desire on the part of those who currently control and run the APC to acknowledge, much less address, the unhealthy situation of the party.

On my part, I have raised concerns in private and, more recently, in public regarding the capricious trajectory of the party. Therefore, at this point in my political journey, I have come to the conclusion that I must seek another political platform for the pursuit of the progressive values I cherish.

Founders rightly feel attached towards institutions they helped create, but one must be pragmatic enough to it when a divergence appears unbridgeable. I have diligently served the APC and made my contributions to its viability as a political platform, but I recognize that the party has since strayed and left me stuck in the vision of its well-meaning founding fathers and mothers.

As a loyal party man, I worked to help secure the APC’s election victories in 2015, 2019 and 2023. I was one of the many governors elected on the party’s platform in 2015 and 2019, that stood for certain democratic and progressive principles to advance nation-building. My eight-year tenure in Kaduna State was devoted to implementing progressive policies to advance human development in education and healthcare, as well as expand infrastructure, promote equality of opportunity, create jobs and attract investments. These records count for little in the current APC that has castrated its organs and treated its hip with contempt in the last two years. I find this no longer acceptable.

Today, 10th March 2025, I have submitted a letter reg my hip of the APC to my ward in Kaduna, effective immediately. Prior to this step, I had concluded consultations with my mentors, colleagues and loyalists across the country about the future. I have now decided to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), and adopt it as the platform for our future political engagements and activities.

Without prejudice to this decision, as a member of the SDP, I will focus on engaging with and persuading other opposition leaders and parties to us and congregate under a unified democratic platform to challenge the APC in all elections and bye-elections between now and 2027 by the Grace of God. I therefore call on all our ers and other persons concerned about our country’s future to us in the SDP in the journey towards making Nigeria flourish as a beacon of pride for Africans and the Black Race.

Thank you and God Bless the Social Democratic Party.
God Bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The Apetu of Ipetumodu, Oba Joseph Oloyede, a Nigerian monarch from Osun State, has been arrested and detained by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) over allegations of defrauding the U.S. government of $4.2 million in COVID-19 relief funds.

Oba Oloyede, who was declared missing in March 2024, was found in FBI custody and is facing a 13-count indictment at the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio.

The indictment, filed on April 3, 2024, accuses him and his associate, Edward Oluwasanmi, of conspiracy, wire fraud, and money laundering.

According to U.S. court documents, the monarch was arrested on May 4, 2024, following an arrest warrant.

The FBI claims Oloyede orchestrated a fraudulent scheme through six ed companies, obtaining relief loans meant to struggling businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The U.S. government introduced financial aid programs, including the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) and Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL), in 2020 to assist businesses affected by the pandemic.

However, investigators allege that Oloyede falsified documents to fraudulently obtain millions of dollars.

Fraudulent Loan Applications and Indictment Details

FBI records reveal that in June 2020 alone, Oloyede secured over $100,000 in loans for four of his companies: Available Tax Services, Available Tutors, Available Financial, and Available Transportation.

In October 2021, he received a $500,000 loan for JO&A and another $500,000 for Available Transportation.

Further investigations indicate that Oloyede assisted co-conspirators in securing fraudulent loans, charging them a percentage of the loan amounts.

“Oloyede assisted co-conspirators and confederate borrowers who submitted and caused to be submitted PPP and EIDL loan applications containing false information,” the indictment stated.

According to prosecutors, between April 2020 and February 2022, Oloyede and Oluwasanmi fraudulently obtained over $4.2 million in Small Business istration (SBA) funds.

Oloyede reportedly pocketed $1.7 million for his businesses and an additional $1.3 million by submitting falsified applications for co-conspirators.

The case is being investigated by the FBI, Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation (IRS-CI), and the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Office of Inspector General (DOT-OIG), under the Pandemic Response ability Committee (PRAC) Fraud Task Force.

Royal Absence and Community Concerns

Oloyede, an ant by profession, was crowned Apetu of Ipetumodu in 2019. He frequently travelled between Nigeria and the U.S. for his royal and personal engagements.

However, his prolonged absence left the Ipetumodu royal stool vacant for nearly a year, raising concerns among the indigenes.

He reportedly missed three major traditional festivals, including the annual Odun Egungun and Odun Edi celebrations.

With his current legal battle in the U.S., it remains uncertain when or if he will return to Nigeria. If convicted, he faces severe penalties, including potential jail time and asset forfeiture.

The case underscores the U.S. government's ongoing efforts to combat pandemic relief fraud and hold offenders able.

The indictment released by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Ohio states that Oloyede and Oluwasanmi submitted falsified tax and wage documents to obtain SBA loans.

“The indictment alleges that they obtained approximately $1.2 million for Oluwasanmi’s entities and $1.7 million for Oloyede’s entities,” the document read.

Oloyede is also alleged to have facilitated fraudulent PPP and EIDL loan applications for other individuals, securing an additional $1.3 million in the process.

As investigations continue, authorities warn that more individuals connected to the scheme may face prosecution.

The Nigerian community in the U.S. and Ipetumodu indigenes are closely monitoring the unfolding legal battle of their embattled monarch.
