I have a friend, we actually met on a Facebook group since 2022 and we have been really close, never met physically. He recently got into the world of tech and he has been doing very well for himself. He's actually working for one of the top fintech remotely.
He has encouraged me multiple times to come stay with him for some time so I can learn tech as my blue collar job is really taking tolls on me with a meagre pay, but he is a member of a known violent cult group predominantly in South West.
I am scared to take this step as I don't want to be a victim of misplaced identity and caught in their notorious clashes we see everyday.
I do really want to improve on myself as I am barely living from hand to mouth as a family man and health wisely I am not enjoying good health with my blue collar job.
Please say a word of advise to me. Thank you.!

Go to Twitter and follow Naija confra and see how deadly these people can be. This afternoon I read where an innocent person was gruesomely murdered by a rival who came looking for the elder brother of the guy they killed. The pictures is so gory and I wept.
These five boys of below 15 years, confessed to stealing phones, motorcycles, and more. They confessed to stealing from many people. They took things that weren't theirs.
One of the boys even confess to using juju and witchcraft power to steal and disappear.
The boy said he got it from his brother . That anytime he says those words, he could vanish into thin air.
Now, the boys are truly sorry. They promise not to steal again. But these acts is bad for young boys of these age.
Bro calm! She is just 20 and still In school I just want to wait for her to finish and plus I want to marry at 35 marriage no be rush.
You're telling someone that outrightly told u she's in a serious relationship to stop going to the said guy house sometimes, that's what another that will have her soon will tell her to do to you....
That is not the answer sir/ma. Be honest with yourself, when was the last time you vended on that meter? If you are truthful, we might be able to help you.
The last time I vended on the meter was 15th, Nov 2024 and i was booked by the monitoring team onth 27th, Nov 2024
See thatβs why you shouldnβt pay. Paying that fee solidifies their position and it will look like you knew about it. Get a pro bono lawyer and fight that fee
Do you records of the time you reached out to him about the meter not triggering off and reading negative value, and do you have records of his responses?
Do you also have records of him saying he doesn't want this meter issue to take his job?
If indeed you are innocent, you should stand your ground and get the guy arrested ASAP. Blow the issue out of proportion and they (his colleagues) will give you a soft landing
Unfortunately, I do not have records of our discussion but he cannot deny me not coming to him. He's one of our respected family friend for over 20 years. I have called my parents to call him which he has also reached out to me to come for another proper discussion. Sincerely, I wouldn't want him to lose his job, he was a man who rose from grass to grace. He was a mere street technician bfr he got favoured from a past governor who saw his work, liked it and slotted him in into the job. I just don't know why he choose to be treating a close associate this way. The first single phase meter he got for me was also a defective one, during those period of meter upgrade, it was when I wanted to upgrade the meter I discovered it has enter tamper code. I took it to their office and I was told to go get a new one as the meter has totally damaged, it was just displaying meter doesn't exit when a check was run on it. I went to meet this same man, paid him to get a 1 phase meter even collected more than the amount for a meter then and he still did this to me....
You keep skipping a vital question some people have asked on here: when last did you vend on that meter?
I provided them the receipts for all my vending payment which I made when I noticed the meter didn't trigger off which I also reported to the official that brought the meter. The official was called and he even pleaded with them...

I understand bro how shits like that sometimes happen. Na rat wey dey inside house dey tell the one outside that food dey.
Just ignore the fine and be without light for now. Calm down and logically analyse your next move.
I don't know your pockets. You may want to go for solar or pay them in installments. Depending on you. This thread can help you peradventure you want to get a solar power station:
Use police carry their staff weh give you the meter first, that way they will know you mean business when you say you donβt know anything about the by. Mo gree pay 451,000 for this economy o!!!!
Caseless:
I don't know which Disco is this(maybe IBEDC), but i'm sure you dare not reconnect yourself without making that payment payment or fix your meter under DISCo where I live. Fixing meter is illegal here. In fact, internal by, they go with the meter.
They removed it, handed it over to me and ask me to bring it to the office.
He may have sold you a defective meter to get his cut, there are special units that deal with meter sales and installations, if you through them you shouldn't have these issues.
You're right. I have been picturing this since the beginning of the issue...
I have read all on this platform. Maybe it was done behind his back or not, there are meters that when they install it for you, your units will burn faster than normal because debt dey on top am. Either from the apartment or one they spread around to cover their deficit. Know this and know peace.
Na issue of thief dey outsmart thief.
It's a pity many think I knowingly by the meter. When the meter monitoring team stormed my apartment, alot of people came to my defense they were yelling at those team that I'll never do such thing knowing fully well of my good personality...
Finally, a reasonable person has spoken. Kudos to you chief ππ. It's so obvious this man knew about the by, it's damn obvious π―. If you're very observant, you'll notice he's only curious about getting it fixed by an unauthorized person so that he can again by the fine slammed on him.
Sir, with all honesty I do not know anything about the meter by. I have another property I placed on rental, I monitor the prepaid there with an eagle eye. How this happened to me still baffle me. I don't joke with paying bills, even my belief doesn't accept it. I was using a single phase meter bfr purchased by this same official, it was when I wanted to upgrade it that I was told it got tamper code on it and as such it cannot be repaired, I was asked to buy new one. I paid this same official again and it's obvious he has been bringing abandoned/ faculty meter to me.
I have wanted to take up the issue and he has been sending people to me to make me see reason why his job will be affected. I do not want him to handle the fixing of the meter that's why I am after repairing it elsewhere...
Nigerians and their ever-poor attitude and behaviour. Someone was caught on meter by and you are still telling him not to allow people wearing the Ikeja Electric uniform which are actually the right people to inspect. If he doesn't allow the genuine people to inspect, is it the fake people who put him into the problems he should still allow?
@OP, seeking advice from Nairaland will only mislead you more cause an average Nigeria is not ready to the right thing. It's better you just take the invite issued to you to their office and follow proceedings. You are even lucky with that amount. I know people who got millions.
Nairalanders will only add to your problems o. Mind you, it's not Nairaland that has been enjoying free energy o.
IyfeNamikaze:
I have worked as an Estate facility manager for 6 years and I have encountered every sorts of meter by. I have never seen a single case where the meter was byed without the consent of the owner/ be it full by or partial by they're always aware of it. Initially they will try to deny ever being aware of the tampering but when I bring out their consumption records and recharge ( depending on how long they have been using the meter)for the past one year and ask them some really deep questions then they start confessing and seeking for soft landings.
The meter installer must have told him " Oga e get wetin I go do for you wey go make your light no go dey finish quick". And guy man would be like " oya na do am for me" .
Sir, with all honesty I know nothing about the by. It was even the meter monitoring team that told me that some wire has been cut off inside the meter. Countless time I also met with the official that brought the meter, he also brush me off...
Ok
Those guys are rude, untrained and unprofessional but I used petition deal with them in Warri, they had to apologize on a similar case of this nature
Gboom:
Those nepa boys are one of the most corrupt people in Nigeria.
My prepaid meter enters a code due to less than 10 units on it and my wife called the installer who sent a guy to me, and he charged me 20k to restore the meter. Later, I heard If I go to their office, it will be like 5k, I was so pained that someone just cheated me like that, it happened second time and on my way to their office I saw one of their staffs who help me out to restore the meter. It happened 3rd time due to 2 factors which are power outage in my area and upgrade in their office. I try to recharge through my bank app but it wasn't successful, but my money was deducted, and I went to their office to see the customer care who gave me the restoring code freely and directed me to the appropriate office to buy the units. I key the code myself and the units and it was successful.
The bottom line is to stop dealing with the touts, go and explain yourself to the customer care who may refer you to appropriate personnel to solve your issue
U see ikeja electric people are a bunch of thieves. That's how they shifted our band without informing us and slammed a huge charge upon us as bill incurred, this kept increasing every month, all complaints fell on deaf ears.
The government needs to do something about that distribution company
kevoh:
First off, why do you need a 3-phase meter? If you are not living in a mansion with many load or run heavy machinery in your house you do not need a three phase meter. If it's the regular bungalow or apartment with regular appliances found in most homes in Nigeria, a single phase prepaid meter will do the job.
From your explanation, it seems the PHCN staff did you dirty. A by literally involves avoiding the meter and connecting wires directly which should be obvious to you except, of course, you are not telling us the full story.
I sincerely do not know about the by. The meter monitoring team told me a wire inside the meter has been cut off....
jiz:
Op, I don't believe in this your story ooo.....you are enjoying free light for days, you no cry to us here and now that you are caught with fine. That you don't know it was by is a childish lie even unit consumption rate suppose to inform you. Anyone ing you in this crime here are also guilty of meter by. Period !
I sincerely do not know about the by. I also reach out to the official that got it for me. He told me probably the free unit that comes with the meter hasn't finish that is why the meter doesn't trigger off..
nwirinedu:
It's obvious that you didn't through the right channels to procure your meter. You ve involved 3rd parties, The meter should have been checked for irregularities like these before and after installation. You can appeal the verdict if you have evidence to back up your claims.
This is a senior NEPA official and a friend to the family that's the reason I approached him. Where I should have learnt my lesson was when the first single phase meter he helped me to get got damaged too. During those period all meter were to be upgraded, the meter refused the kyc code and I was asked to go get a new one. Now the new one he got is a deficient meter too...
