But what had this got to do with us here in Nigeria?

Real countries are repatriating their citizens from south africa. When will Nigeria fetch its citizens?
South Africa fetched its citizens from other affected countries, but I saw some Nigerians crying that China is racist in Wuhan instead of blaming their country for not looking after then they cry foul from the host country. Please fetch your people we don't have capacity to care for our people and your drug dealers/scammers.

Please is there anyone in South Africa with a visit visa and is been stranded just like me in the house? My stay here elapse by 11th Of this month and I don’t want to be banned for overstaying.

It is the responsibility of your government to evacuate from south africa, like , Brazil asked SAA to take back their citizens fat the home country's cost. Same with South Africa is evacuating their citizens from other countries. However I dnt think you will be penalized if your days expire within this period.

Let her apply for naija visa but that will be when Borders are open sha.
South Africa revoked all visas issued and also revoked all visa free statuses to countries that did no need visa except SADC Countries. So all who where issued visas will need to reapply.

South Africa starts preliminary work on coronavirus vaccine

The University of Cape Town, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research as well as the Biological and Vaccines Institute of Southern Africa are working on this project.

South Africa has started work on the development of a vaccine for the Covid-19 virus, Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande has said.

The University of Cape Town, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research as well as the Biological and Vaccines Institute of Southern Africa are working on this project.

Nzimande was addressing journalists on Tuesday following President Cyril Ramaphosa’s announcement of a 21-day lockdown to curb the spread of the virus.

He said a number of existing drugs was currently being re-purposed and tested for efficacy, adding current international trials under the co-ordination of the World Health Organisation were being monitored.

He also announced preliminary work on the development of vaccines had started.

“Progress is expected in about 18 months,” Nzimande said.

And, the South African Centre for Epidemiological Modelling and Analysis has been engaging with other data and modelling groups to refine its assumptions to produce an updated model of the spread of the virus.

Nzimande said that should be completed by Friday.

In of diagnostic tools, he added it had become urgent to locally manufacture reagents for testing kits.

“These are currently being imported and the lockdown may threaten access to supplies.

“The DSI [Department of Science and Innovation] has negotiated the repurposing of various facilities and labs to respond to the outbreak. The entities in line to assist include Biovac, Centres of Excellence in TB Research, Centre of Proteomic and Genomic Research and Afrigen Bio.

“Discussions are under way to facilitate accreditation for some of the facilities to produce reagents. The team will be discussing budget requirements this afternoon.

“For the above projects, the Department of Science and Innovation has already availed R12 million and will redirect an additional R30 million.”

Meanwhile, Nzimande provided an update on the tertiary institutions as the country prepares for lockdown.

He said all universities and colleges have implemented early recess, and preparations for short- to medium-term strategies, including online studying, were underway at most institutions.

Nzimande added Nsfas allowances would still be paid to students despite universities asking students to vacate early.

Some universities have allowed students with exceptional circumstances to stay on campus with international students who could not vacate the residences, he said.

“Most academic staff is working from home and only essential service staff is in place on campuses. staff is at work on a rotational basis to limit and the spread of the virus. Research continuity is being put in place at most institutions.”

Nzimande said the 76 students who were repatriated from Wuhan in China, where the Covid-19 outbreak started, have been tested and were found to be negative.

That batch of students, who were among those in isolation in Limpopo, will be undergoing their final tests this weekend, thereafter, if their tests come back negative, they will be reunited with their families.

“They have been placed in quarantine at the Birchwood Hotel and Conference Centre in Kempton Park for 14 days.

Nzimande said the department was working with the Department of International Relations and Cooperation to compile a complete list of all South Africans studying abroad, both publicly and privately funded.

Can you give us update about how south africa is intending to handle the lockdown and managed the economy during this epidemic.

You guys have locked down your country , what is going to happen to the less privileged people. there is a debate to also introduce this in Ghana but i personally prefer curfew instead.

The two richest families in south Africa pledged R1 billion each to keep the economy running. The money will be used to subsidise South African owned small companies to keep paying their workers, provide shelter for the homeless and the food for the underprivileged. There is an opened for all businesses to pledge more. South African defense force will be patroling the streets allowing only those that where mentioned by the president to move around, Sadly I will be one of those since I work in media.

These are popular rumors about the coronavirus that have been debunked.

U.S. engers arriving on aircraft into South Africa are not being allowed to disembark, and have been told to go back home because of the coronavirus.

Those who landed Friday in Johannesburg on one airline’s plane are fighting to get a flight back Friday evening, after the return flight was cancelled.

Travelers from the U.S. on both a South African Airways flight from New York and a Delta aircraft from Atlanta are among those reported to be affected.

CLICK HERE FOR COMPLETE CORONAVIRUS COVERAGE

South Africa introduced a ban on entering the country Wednesday for travelers coming from countries identified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as high-risk with the COVID-19 virus -– including the U.S., the U.K., Italy and China.

A South African Airways Airbus A350-900, which had arrived from New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport was --with aircraft from China Air, Italy’s Alitalia, and several other airlines--directed to a remote parking bay distant from the terminals, surrounded by police, and boarded by public health officials.

South African residents and permanent residence holders were the only engers allowed off these aircraft, after being “thoroughly” screened onboard by masked officials.

Several Americans on board the flight from JFK reportedly staged angry protests against not being allowed off, and the prospect of a 16-hour flight back to New York.

The Johannesburg OR Tambo Airport authority issued a statement: "Foreign nationals are not allowed to disembark (from these aircraft). The aircraft will be contained at an isolated bay with all officials ensuring the utmost care is taken. We are currently working with the airline to ensure that foreign nationals return to the country of origin.”

It may not be easy for these engers to get back to New York, as just hours after the plane landed from JFK, the airline which carried them, South African Airways, cancelled all international flights with immediate effect until May 31, because of the COVID-19 virus and its effect on enger yields.

Efforts to find out what has happened airside to the U.S. engers, all denied entry, have been unsuccessful. Fox News reached out to South African Airways for comment, but they have not provided further clarification.

The only other airline flying directly to the U.S. from South Africa is Delta. They told Fox News that their last flight into Johannesburg will start its round trip on March 22, just two days from now.

CORONAVIRUS CONCERNS IN SOUTH AFRICA HAVE TRAVELERS IN FEAR OF GETTING 'STUCK' AMID CONFUSION BY GOVERNMENT

With direct flights to the U.S. stopping, there is now a scramble by U.S. business travelers and tourists here to try to get back to the U.S. via indirect routes. This could be circuitous, as the logical alternative would normally be to fly home via Europe. But with the U.S. banning flights from Europe, Americans will have to fly possibly much longer than 24 hours in total from the time the door closes here and opens on the apron in the U.S.

There are some questions: how did airport airline officials in countries such as the U.S. allow engers from those countries to board, when the flight ban has been so well-publicized.

Some say the South African government is to blame. In a news conference Wednesday, the South African transport minister Fikile Mbalula said that while the ban was being introduced that day, that the government would give until around the middle of next week for travelers to complete their journeys. Nevertheless, on Friday, hundreds remained stuck at Johannesburg’s airport.

It’s also being argued that the U.S. State Department is not offering the correct advice to those wishing to travel to South Africa. The South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the entry ban Sunday, and on Monday his transport minister clarified that citizens from countries including the U.S. who up until now have been able to enter South Africa visa-free for 90 days, now need visas – and that the government does not wish to issue visas at this time. But the State Department’s advisory page for South Africa, five days later, still now under its Quick Facts section says U.S. citizens do not need a visa to come.

South Africa has made the flight ban undoubtedly because all but a maximum of 20 of the 202 COVID-19 infections have come from travelers who have recently arrived on international flights, rather than local domestic transmission. The country has so far not only not had a single death from the virus, but at this time none of the patients who are hospitalized are in bad enough condition to be in ICU. Patient Zero, the first person to be confirmed to be infected, after returning from an Italian skiing holiday, was discharged from hospital fully recovered Thursday.

35 of South Africa’s 72 land ports of entry will be closed in an effort to limit the movement of people, not goods.

On Monday morning, various ministers from a number of South African departments convened to brief the media and elaborate on the national state of disaster announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa on Sunday evening.

Among the announcements made by Minister of Home Affairs Aaron Motsoaledi was the announcement that 35 of South Africa’s 72 land ports of entry would be closed in an effort to limit the movement of people, not goods.

He reiterated that the department of trade and industry would not be negatively affected by measures implemented by DHA as they were cognisant not to impact commercial activities.

As a result, 12 border posts between Botswana and South Africa will be closed. Five border posts between Lesotho and South Africa will be operational, four will be closed. One border post between Mozambique and South Africa will be operational, two will be closed. Two border posts between Namibia and South Africa will be operational, three will be closed. Because there is only one border post between South Africa and Zimbabwe, it will have to remain open.

Officials from the closed posts will be reassigned to open posts to assist with the possibility of increased traffic.

Of the country’s eight seaports, only two will be closed to the movement of people. This will be done at Saldhana Bay and Mossel Bay.

engers at Saldhana Bay and Mossel Bay will not be allowed to disembark and there will be no crew changes allowed for ships who often exchange staff compliments from time to time.

Visas
Since Visas are the only way to limit movement, this is how the movement of international visitors from high-risk areas will be controlled.

Visas issued to Iranian and Chinese citizens between January and February will be revoked.

Italian, French, German, American, South Korean and British citizens will now need visas to enter South Africa.

Health certificate-based visas for international visitors from medium-risk areas such as Portugal, Hong-Kong and Singapore will now be required.

Study visas and work permits will not be affected. However, if people on study visas and work permits travel to the aforementioned affected areas, this may affect their re-entry into the country.

Mostoaledi also explained that his department is making use of an offshore enger control system to pre-emptively screen air engers in ongoing efforts to limit the entry of high-risk individuals into the country.

We complain of 4 hours without electricity once in many months in Nigeria they celebrate 4 hours of electricity every day.that County is a mess. The only thing I liked about nigeria was that things are cheap but you cnt invest. The economy is disfunctional in a way that if you not staying at the hotel you pay rent for the whole duration instead of monthly. And the respect they have for whites is disgusting, I was with a white dude who was my intern but to them that boy was God.their still in dark ages. The EPL rights will not be affected by this law as their not controlled by Nigerian laws and they can sell to who ever they want at their own market value. The law will only be for sports within Nigeria or sports of public interest to Nigerians mind you EPL is for the privileged is not a right to the Nigerian public.

The South African regulators are trying to do the same with local:rugby, Cricket and soccer, however the country can not afford such because this law will have a negative impact to the revenue of the league which will affect the clubs as funding will reduce meaning they would not be able to compete for big names in the market reducing professional sport into farmers leagues.

The truth is professional sports is is no longer a recreational thing, It is profit driven and run with capitalism ideology. TV rights is the main funders of sports. It is the duty of state run broadcasters to bid for the rights at market value and distribute fairly as deemed by government.
