At about 9:30pm on Sunday 29 September 2024, some bandits again kidnapped Mr Tasiu Habibu, the Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Kidandan village of Giwa Local Government Area (LGA), Kaduna State.

The bandits likewise made away with 3 children of a health worker in the village who is a neighbour to Habibu.

The NURTW chairman was just recently freed by bandits after being held captive for about 60 days.

THE SATURDAY ATTACK

A resident of Kidandan village named Sanusi Kidandan confirmed the incident, and said most of the villagers couldn’t sleep due to gunshots.

He said, “The father of the 3 children is a neighbour of the chairman. They took away the children who are all minors, and the chairman, making 4 people in total.

“The abductors shot sporadically during the invasion. They came around 9:30 pm,” he added.

According to him, one villager named Idris Jibril was shot by the bandits and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

At time of going to press, there has been no official statement from the Kaduna State Government or the Police.

The State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police(ASP) Mansir Hassan, could also not be reached on phone.

Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has arrested a former governor of Taraba State, Darius Dickson Ishaku, over alleged fraud to the tune of ₦27bn.

He was arrested at his Abuja house early on Friday 27 September 2024 and is still being held at time of going to press.

According to reports, no less than 15 charges have been filed against Ishaku and evidence is being compiled for his arraignment in court.

When ed, EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity Dele Oyewale confirmed the arrest but declined further comment.

Ishaku’s arrest comes amidst the ongoing imbroglio between the EFCC and former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello, who is alleged to have stolen ₦80.2bn.

Another major breakthrough has just been recorded in the war against banditry in Nigeria’s north.

Dreaded bandit warlord Kachalla Sani Black, responsible for multiple terror attacks, has been eliminated.

This happened when he was ambushed and killed by local vigilantes, with of the Nigerian Army, at Magama Mai Rake area in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

Two of Sani Black’s sons are reported to have also been killed during the clash.

The vigilantes recovered two Avtomat Kalashnikova (AK-47) rifles, a Pulemyot Kalashnikova (PKT) machine gun, and an undisclosed amount of cash from the scene.

BACKSTORY

For years, Sani Black had terrorized communities across the northern parts of Zamfara, and was notorious for deadly attacks, abductions, and sexual violence.

Having more than 150 armed followers, he extended a reign of terror beyond Zamfara to neighboring Kaduna, Niger, and Kebbi States.

The elimination of Kachalla Sani Black follows the earlier killing of another notorious bandit kingpin Halilu Sububu along with 38 of his men, by troops of Operation Hadarin Daji on Thursday 13 September 2024.

On Saturday 21 September 2024, the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OIF) observed the Year 2024 International Day of Peace in Abuja, capital of Nigeria.

OIF aims to promote French language and cooperation between its 88 member states/governments made up of 54 full , 7 associate and 27 observer .

Established 1981 by unanimous United Nations resolution, the International Day of Peace aka “Peace Day” is celebrated around the world every 21st September. The 2024 theme is “Let us Develop a Culture of Peace”.

Speaking at the event, the OIF Representative for West Africa, Madame Tran Thi Hoang Mai, said every human irrespective of colour and beliefs must embrace peace and make the world a better place to live.

She said, “Peace is in the heart of all and we must all promote it and live as one.”

Bulgarian Ambassador to Nigeria Yanko Yordanov, speaking on behalf of the ambassadors who witnessed the event, said sharing and preaching of peace as part of universal values will further unite the world.

He added that the francophone countries see Nigeria as one of its natural partners and will continue to use diplomacy, dialogue and collaboration as tools to promote peaceful coexistence across the globe.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has notified agencies which employ staff for the private sector that the new ₦70,000 minimum wage is compulsory.

This was done on Wednesday 18 September 2024 by the Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Alhaji Ismaila Abubakar.

He was speaking at the 13th Annual General Meeting of the Employers Association for Private Employment Agencies of Nigeria, at Ikeja, Lagos State.

According to him, “The minimum wage is now a law, and as a result, it is a punishable crime for any employer to pay less than ₦70,000 to any of its workers.

“The minimum wage is a law, and you can be jailed if you fail to implement it. The Federal Government is committed to ensuring that the least paid worker goes home with ₦70,000.”

In celebration of this year’s World Identity Day on Monday 16 September 2024, Nigeria’s National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has launched a brand new logo, as displayed below.

This follows the successful conclusion of the NIMC Logo Design Competition which kicked off earlier in the year.

The Competition was open to students of Primary, Secondary and Tertiary Institutions of learning across the country and rounded up on 16 August 2024.

The new logo was designed by a Nigerian student and is the winning entry in the Logo Design Competition.

Early on Tuesday 10 September 2024, the Alau Dam in Maiduguri, northeastern Nigeria, collapsed, submerging several wards in the city and leaving thousands homeless.

The Dam is located in Konduga Local Government Area (LGA) of Borno State and was opened in 1986 for irrigation, domestic use, and flood control in Maiduguri.

The dam’s collapse is the result of recent very heavy rainfall across the state which has led to serious flooding in Bama, Biu, Chibok, Dikwa, Jere, and Konduga LGAs.

The flood has submerged residential areas, roads and bridges, making many areas in the Maiduguri metropolis inaccessible.

In the evening of Thursday 5 September 2024, Mrs. Elizabeth Uruakpa, a 66-year-old widow and Assistant Chief Nursing Officer at Babcock University Teaching Hospital in Ilisan Remo, Ikenne Local Government Area of Ogun State, was kidnapped by unknown gunmen.

The kidnap occurred at about 7pm, as Uruakpa was on her way home from an evening service at Winners Chapel.

The hoodlums waylaid her close to her house behind new Ilisan market, forced her into a red Toyota Camry car, and sped away, causing serious trepidation in the neighbourhood.

Eyewitnesses narrated the resulting pandemonium, with many shop owners and residents quickly shutting their doors to avoid being caught in the melee.

Dr. Joshua Suleiman, Director of Communication and Marketing at Babcock University, confirmed the incident, saying, “I learned about the situation last night. It was shared on one of the university’s platforms, but we are still gathering details. I will provide more information as it becomes available.”

Ogun State Police Command Public Relations Officer Omolola Odutola disclosed that the Command was alerted about the incident through a distress call, and assured that investigation is already ongoing.

The government of the Caribbean nation Haiti has widened its state of emergency to cover the whole country.

This comes as the authorities wrestle violent gangs that have overtaken many sections of the capital Port-au-Prince and are now trying to invade other regions.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived the country on Thursday 5 September 2024.

His visit aims to reassert the commitment of the U.S. to the multinational mission which has been deployed to fight gangs in the country, and he will also advocate for general elections.

He is scheduled to have a meeting with Garry Conille, Prime Minister of Haiti since 3 June 2024, for discussions about “forthcoming steps in Haiti’s democratic transition”.

Mr Conille has been attempting to restore order since the new government was formed 3 months ago.

The United Nations has estimated that almost 580,000 people have been internally displaced by Haiti’s conflict, with nearly 5 million facing severe hunger.

The highly populated Ouest department, which hosts the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince, was on 3 March 2024 placed under a state of emergency. This has now been extended to cover the entire country.

Effective from Tuesday 03 September 2024, the world’s biggest single-train refinery in Lekki, Nigeria, has begun its first shipment of Motor Spirit (PMS) aka petrol or gasoline.

The 650,000 barrels per day Dangote Refinery has now successfully completed testing and is ready to pump its products into the local market.

This is expected to bring relief to Nigerians who have been facing serious scarcity of gasoline across the country.

Officials of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Limited are already on standby at the plant to take delivery of the first petrol shipment, and it will be available at fuel stations from Thursday 05 September 2024.

The Shipping Agencies, Clearing and Forwarding Employers Association (SACFEA) has approved ₦200,000 as minimum monthly wage for workers in the maritime sector.

The g ceremony between SACFEA and the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria was organised by the Nigerian Shippers’ Council with of the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, after 20 years of struggle.

During the document g ceremony on Saturday 24 August 2024 in Lagos, the President of SACFEA, Mrs Boma Ayomide Alabi (SAN), noted that the new minimum conditions of service for workers in shipping would be the highest in any industry across Nigeria.
