There are too many job seeking youths out there. Rather than pay, government officials prefer to embezzle the resources and belabor citizens with that responsibility. They really need it. And the said Thursday sanitation should continue too. All market men and women, lock & shops should be force to carry out the exercises. The government should invest in waste management by providing good vehicles for carrying the waste. There should proper waste dumping sites where some of the waste be converted for another purpose. They should not give to party chief to handle it but they can give it to reliable private companies. These will create job opportunities at all local government area across Lagos state.

Whatever it costs, they have no choice but to do it, or they have no business calling themselves 'megacity', 'Centre of Excellence' and all these pompous titles belied by filthy open gutters.

That whole mentality of building roads without caring about pedestrians or pedestrian infrastructure like covered drainage and sidewalks, must go. It's a backward and primitive mentality. And this applies to the whole country, not just Lagos.

(i) registration of all births, deaths and marriages;
(i) out-door advertising and hoarding;
(ii) movement and keeping of pets of all descriptions;
(iii) shops and kiosks;
(iv) restaurants, bakeries and other places for sale of food to the public,
(v) laundries, and
(vi) licensing, regulation and control of the sale of liquor.

Apart from these exclusive functions, the function of Local Governments shall include participation of such Councils in the government of a state as respects the following matters:
(a) the provision and maintenance of primary, adult and vocational education;
(b) the development of agriculture and natural resources other than the exploitation of minerals;
(c) the provision and maintenance of health services; and
(d) such other functions as may be conferred on a local Government Council by the House of Assembly of the State.

As provided for in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Local Governments have functions and responsibilities assigned.
Some of these functions are performed exclusively by the Local Government like the maintenance of cemeteries, markets and motor parks. On the other hand, some other functions and responsibilities are performed concurrently with the State Government. Among these concurrent functions are primary education, agriculture, health and any other functions that may be conferred on Local Government by the House of Assembly of the State.

As can be seen, these various functions and responsibilities of Local Governments are quite enormous and demanding. The tragedy of the situation is that Local Governments have very limited and circumscribed sources of revenue to enable them execute meaningfully and effectively the functions and responsibilities assigned to them.

In my local government at Ajeromi Ifelodun in Ajegunle, we have not felt the presence of local government at all, take for instance, the road from otto – wharf to Achakpo have never been maintained for as provided in the constitution, the question begging for an answer, is what do the Ajeromi Local Government do with money that go to them?

All boil down to governance. Buhari/Idiagbon implemented “War against indiscipline”. Citizens sat up immediately. You could not urinate indiscriminately or through refuse anywhere you likes. People would not dare jump queues and everywhere was calm, until a certain IBB and his friend Abacha removed them. The country returned to its previous state.

Mr Man Abuja has over 5 million people, Nigerians living inside it, including lower income people living in flats and bungalows. Not everyone in Abuja is rich and lives in a mansion.

This stereotype of Abuja is usually made by those who’ve never been there or just stayed there a few days.

The truth is that the city is filled with millions of ordinary Nigerians. Many of the estates are not even ‘luxury’ as such. If you can afford rent in Surulere or Ikeja in Lagos, you can afford to rent a nice place in one those estates in Abuja.

And don’t mention those outskirts shanties. Those are towns with their own names, not Abuja.
