EduBrazil1991: Chief, stop giving yourself unnecessary headache over loan or partnership. 13k stands, that should be less than 3 acres. That's too small to be looking for loan/partnership to set up a factory. The returns will be too small compared to the cost of setting up a factory. You can only proceed with the factory project if you hav money of your own. Instead of giving yourself sleepless night over loan acquisition or partnership stress, I will advise you sell the raw tuber for now or engage some locals to help with the processing into garri. There are some centres where those locals will grind, peel and fry for you. Then, use the proceeds to expand gradually by getting some basic machines/equipment little by little. By the time you process and sell the produce from the 2nd batch, you should be able to hav funds to set up a mini mechanized cassava factory. I was a bit familiar with that town in those days. Matna foods is there to buy tubers. I also know some local markets for both tuber and garri as people used to come from within and outside the state for patronage. 1 Like |

Lanjonath: I do not outrightly condemn grafting, the guy is a newbie and he has already transplanted, grafting is not an option for him at that stage, I only suggested options with which he can pick from to manage his crop since he has transplanted. I don't do grafting nor use grafted seedlings and I will never do. I have better cultivars with better yield ( even more than double the yield of what you quoted above) and I have no worry about BW. |

Jaywrld: Lol, pls ignore him. The grafting option is not for you or are you into research and development? (Maybe those growing perennial crops may find it useful). You should hav asked him to name just only one tomato rootstock that can be grafted and give 99% BW resistant cultivar as he claimed. Even the Almighty research and development firms like East-west seed, technisem, etc...the best they can offer is 50% (intermediate) BW resistance cultivar. |

Jaywrld: 1. Biological method. This involves the use of beneficial microorganisms to control/prevent disease in your farm. You can get them online under diff trademarks. I learnt this from emmaachile. 2.chemical method. a. Treating your soil with copper based fungicide can also suppress BW b. Treating your soil with velum prime. 3. Conventional method. a. Raising your soil pH by applying agricultural lime can suppress their activity b. Adding organic matters to your soil can also minimize their effects. c. Prevent waterlogging/flooding by creating avenue for free flow of erosion during rainfall. Sometimes, I deliberately cut my ridges in area proned to waterlogging for water to waka . 2 Likes |

Akhaz024: Late Aug. I would hav suggested crops such as pepper, tomato, cucumber, but they require some level of experience and also involve high cost of maintenance and more attention/time which you may not not be able to afford being a student. Since you are clearing now, you can go for cheap and easy to maintain stuff like maize and cassava. You can plant only corn 3 times b4 the year runs out or you plant maize once, midway, inter-crop with cassava. 1 Like |

Why the 3 together esp the choice of cassava? How are you rooting out your cassava at harvest without you rooting out the pineapple? |

Mariangeles: The variety he got is not suitable for commercial purpose due to... 1. Late maturity (almost 60 days unlike some varieties that mature in less than 40days)... If harvesting is done every 4-day, imagine your fellow farmer who planted other species going to market more than five times B4 your own gets matured. Besides, you keep spending resources on pumping water for irrigation for like extra 2weeks B4 maturing. 2. Poor/low yield 3. Poor disease resistance...Downy mildew ( most stubborn cuke disease) no be him mate. 4. Low shelf life... imagine harvesting your cukes and due to one issue or the other you couldn't sell within 3 days, it wl start turning to yellow color, esp when subjected to high temperature/heat. 5. The body is not smooth/not attractive to buyers due to the presence of spines all over its body. 1 Like |

emmaachile2: Thanks for sharing. 1. How often should the mebo be applied during the plants lifetime to avoid abuse? 2. The use of furadan to control whiteflies is a new revelation to me, I normally use it to treat my soil against nematodes in my raised bed nursery and b4 transplanting. No wonder i didn't hav much issue with whiteflies. How best is it used against whiteflies since it's not soluble in water for spraying? 3. I was expecting imidacloprids among your list but I couldn't find it there. Any reservations? |

franvincoop: At the bolded, I think this is the only way forward for now since the OP said he had gotten seeds from other source. Unfortunately cash refund seems to be against business norms of my SE people...igbos prefer replacement than refund. But some jinx are meant to be broken in the interest of peace and sanity. I mentioned earlier in my 1st post that in business sometimes, we should be ready to sacrifice some resources for good customers relations sake. Some losses are just inevitable in business for the sake of peace and keeping your customers. Over, I'm out of here. 2 Likes |

I have carefully read from the both parties. I am not here to cast any aspersions but to share some experiences that might benefit all and sundry. This type of issue is not uncommon in the seed biz arena. I have been there before... I can relate with both sides 1. Many yrs ago, there was a particular batch of Avenir F1 pepper seed in the circulation that refused to germinate. That year most pepper farmers counted their losses. Imagine big seed firm like technisem! 2. Few years ago I think Mr emmaachille decided to clear his shelves of some left over seeds like carrots, onions, cucumber etc, I put in and got some. Unfortunately most of the seed did not germinate. I concluded the seeds are probably stale and he is not aware that that they will not germinate. Considering the fact he has done businesses that run into millions of naira on this forum, I know he is too big to scam me and others who got the seeds at just shikini change. Till today, I never even mention it to him. 3. I bought some heirloom pepper seeds like two different varieties from my regular supplier in Feb. I nursed out of it for my clients same month and both varieties did germinate excellently well. Two months later after I supplied my clients with the seedlings, it was time to nurse the ones I will plant for myself, only one out of the two varieties germinated, still same stock o, just 2 months interval...I tried diff methods, na lie e no gree. 4. I supplied a woman in Uyo like 2 or 3kg( I can't exactly like over 4 yrs now) of my okra seed. I was shocked when she called me few days later that all the seed did not germinate. This is strange! I quickly took few seed from the batch to experiment, lo and behold...she was right! I quickly apologized and packaged another batch and sent to her all bills on me. I even thanked her for not coming online to give me a bad name. 5. An intending buyer called for okra seed in 2nd quarter of the year. He said he will be planting by Dec/Jan dry season. Considering the lesson I leant from point 4 above, I told him... Dec is still far, don't buy from this batch, it's germination rate may diminish by then, wait and watch out for current/new batch by then. I believe both parties involved can infer one or two things from the experiences I shared above. Oga Okoroemeka pls try to reach a compromise with your client. I know you are far bigger than the cost price of the seed involved, in this biz, sometimes we deliberately part with some resources...it's part of the risk in the biz. Oga xpol, it's obvious you are still angry, pls after the compromise, do something about the thread. Shalom. 4 Likes 1 Share |

emmaachile2: Following bros. Never knew you are still in veggie production as you disposed all your seeds at give away price here couple of years. I will be more interested in the use of beneficial fungi to fight pests. Furadan is banned and no longer common in the market, even the a.i in wormforce has been secretly replaced by Jubaili. |

Mariangeles: Lo, Just seeing the mention, I know nothing. I still get people i look up to too. @smug4real, Are u doing irrigation fed or rain fed? Are u using hybrid or random seeds? Answers may help to provide more help. To your questions... 1. The right pre-emergent herbicide(s) to use on the farm From my experience , pre emergent herbicides tend to stress transplanted seedlings, I don't use it for fragile seedlings like pep, tom and cukes, I use it for tougher crops. 2. How to time application of the suggested herbicide to ensure safety of the plants after transplanting What I normally do is, make your ridges ready, then do your nursery. Pepper takes min of 6weeks in the nursery, by them all seeds of the weed inside your ridges would have sprouted. Then, use post emergent herbicides (not pre-emergent) to kill them, wait for few days and do your transplanting . 3. The best fertilizers/ manure to use for enhanced harvest Manure: for organic, chicken is the best, it must be well cured/decomposed. Cow dungs are usually filled with undigested grass seed that will germinate later and give u some headache. Fertilizer: for inorganic, SSP, potassium nitrate/MOP, Epsom, NPK 15 15 15, etc. Don't use urea. 4. The best insecticides and fungicides to use...and how to time application effectively. Get 2 insecticides with different active ingredients, rotate them weekly. The interval may be shorter/longer depending on rainfall. Fungicide: same as insecticide. 1 Like |

McLizbae:just follow the hints listed earlier and you are good to go. If you don't have a graduated vessel that u can use to measure in ml, u can use the blue cap of the bottle, each full cap is around 30ml. In addition, while spraying generally, ensure the spray from your nozzle is in fine form( as in mist or vapour) not coming out like a straight drop of rain. You can achieve this by . using a dirt free water or using a flexible cloth to sieve your water .cleaning every dirt blocking the holes of the nozzle .ensuring the nozzle end is not too loosely connected. 2 Likes |
